There's another way to make caramel, and it is even easier. Take the label off an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk and put it on a rack in a large pot filled with water. Boil it, completely underwater, for four hours. Cool completely. Open the can on both ends and push out the big lump of caramel that has formed. I've never done this, but I know people who have and say it's really delicious. The only drawback- waiting all that time to taste the fruit of your labor!
