At abelard.org, we followed this case closely from the beginning. It has been clear all the way through that Captain Mangouras is being made a scapegoat for stupid and amateur decisions made by the Spanish maritime authorities, and in order to try and absolve Spanish politicians of any blame rightfully due to them.

The Master was facing a dangerous situation and acted according to the rules and his professional judgment. On the other hand the Public servants sitting on their big chairs and enjoying their high salaries could not detect the criticality of the situation and were not willing to assume their responsibility. Therefore the easiest decision was to send a damaged vessel to battle the storm.
Having in mind the problems that Captain Mangouras is facing, I do not know what will happen in the worldwide trade and consequently to the end consumers if the Masters the Officers and the Crew members onboard tankers worldwide will start abandoning the marine profession.

Countries still have no facilities for port of refuge if you have a problem on your vessel. Aout time a few heads were knocked together.

Foolish of States to push out any ship asking for refuge into a major storm. What did they expect? Bunny wabbits to come out of the ship when it foundered?
