Do Brevity Blog readers want to see calls for nonfiction submissions from other magazines?

As the editor of "Sol: English Writing in Mexico," this service was recently extended to me through Dinty Moore's blog. I asked him to post for me because our magazine, like the one currently posted, receives fewer quality nonfiction submissions than we do in poetry and fiction. The response, by the way, was immediate and I was thrilled with the quality of literary nonfiction that came pouring in.

But I must admit as a writer and writing coach, I have a bias against magazines that require a submission fee. Even if it is as low as the currently featured $3.00, it will make me think twice about submitting 98% of the time. Our magazine has no submission fee, and I believe it runs against the grain of professionalism to have one. My opinion--no offense meant to the magazine in question. But the logic for requiring $3.00 as a "handling fee" for electronic submissions and no fee for hard copy with SASE falls short. It takes more "handling" to hold on to a manuscript's SASE, get it back in the envelope, and mail it, than it does to send a simple email.
