I believe Josh Brolin could play Rick an Zoey Deshanel could play Lisa.

Tom Hanks... The only male actor who truly acts (other than Johnny Depp who is all wrong for the part)... The other so-called male actors wouldn't know how to create a character if their lives depended on it. They merely play themselves and quote lines... I know, I have a theatre degree and can spot a true actor.

George Clooney as Rick.
Marion Cotillard or Kate Winslet as Ilsa.
John Goodman as Signor Ferrari.
Clive Owen as Victor.
Jean Dujardin as Renault.
Liev Schreiber as Strasser.
Don Cheadle as Sam.
And I would cast Isabella Rosselini and Stephen H. Bogart as patrons of Rick's.

John Leguizamo - it's time for some fresh blood atop the leader board.

I think Becky nailed it straightaway. Russell Crowe would be terrific as that world-weary yet romantic character originated by Bogart.
Kathy Crouthamel - 11 years ago
My choice to play Rick would be Daniel Craig, someone with a rough edge, yet polished and sophisticated. A great Ilsa might be his real-life wife, Rachel Weisz. Awesome pairing for this movie.
Jean - 11 years ago
I would like to see Donnie Wahlberg as Rick. After seeing his portrayal in 'Band of Brothers' and his character in 'Blue Bloods,' I believe he is tough enough, tender, yet intense enough to play the Rick character. Johanson for sure for Ilsa.
Marilyn - 11 years ago
Brad Pitt has the same suave intelligence and build as Bogart, and George Clooney could play the Claude Rains police character. Marion Cotillard would be perfect for the Ilsa role. However, I would have liked to see Brad and Angelina in the starring roles, like when Liz Taylor and Richard Burton starred together as Anthony and Cleopatra. But Angelina wasn't even nominated in your female category.

I believe Tom Hanks or Michael Douglas would be a best fit for the Rick Blaine role. Bill Macy is another possibility, but I haven't seen Macy in a romantic role. The other male nominees would not do as credible a job portraying the Blaine role as Bogart did. Wally

I believe Jeffery Dean Morgan as Rick, and Katherine Heigl would be great together in a movie together. They make great chemistry as seen on Grey's Anatomy, and both fit the looks and personality. Please do not consider Joslie and Pitt.

Actually, I would cast Bruce Willis as Rick. Rick Blaine is a 'rough and tumble' kind of guy.... Not polished like George Clooney. You need a tough guy to play Rick.
Wanda - 11 years ago
Actually my choices for Rick weren't on your list. I believe Tim Allen and Chuck Norris look more like Humphrey Bogart than any of those pretty faced boys you chose for your survey.

I agree not to do a sequel, but rather another movie with the suspense and element of surprise. However, IF there were some kind of sequel, I would vote for Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. The pair worked very well together in The Tourist. The chemistry seemed right. The other option for me would be Cate Blanchett. She has the soft eyes that can also be piercing. Her face, being very pretty, can appear innocent and pensive at the same time. I think the same could be said about Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johannson as well. For the male character, I still would go with Johnny Depp as a first choice and Leonardo DiCaprio as a second.

Parade owes its readers an apology. This is the 21st century, but apparently Rick must still be white? Why is Denzel Washington not on this list if you are really interested in a re-do? And even though the 42 year old Bogey looked older than that in his 1940's garb, if you want younger, Idris Elba, Terrence Howard or Will Smith would fill the bill. Skyfall's Naomie Harris, Kerry Washington, Thandie Newton or even Freida Pinto makes a great Ilsa and why not Don Cheadle or David David Oyelowo as the saintly Victor Laszlo? Diversity is NOT HARD if you try people. Parade needs to expand its little survey to find the best cast.

I would have picked Paul Newman if I had been asked 15 years ago. As it is, I agree with the people who say a sequel isn't a good idea.

this movie should NOT HAVE A SEQUEL... leave this 4 star movie alone, instead try a NEW APPROACH WITH AN IMMIGRATION-TYPE THEME.. ( ALL IN THE NEWS ANYWAYS TODAY.. ).my suggestion would be a little esponiage. with mystery, a real who-done-it, & not able to quess who the culprits are..a little known new & up coming actors /actresses, really dynamic & serious in thier ways to play the parts.. of all the gin joints, she had to walk into here, someone with that lauren bacall attitude in >> the movie " to have & have not "

I like Clive Owen for the Paul Henreid role (Ilsa's husband).

.. tdy's remake I think RICHARD GERE & BARBARA HERSEY...the right combination & he is exotic & she is serious type

I thought about all the choices and considered Ben Affleck but when I tried to picture him in the hat with the cigarette it didn't work for me. However when I pictured George Clooney in the hat....with the cigarette and looking deep into someones eyes like the scene pictured in the magazine on Sunday that was when I knew it was George Clooney for my vote. He has that ability to look totally focused on someone and look into their soul.

The thought of a "Casablanca" sequel makes me weep. However, if I had my arm twisted to name a tough guy with a heart of gold -- a man whose brusque demeanor doesn't obscure his wit and humor, whose tortured soul bleeds through his steely gaze.... I'm thinking someone like Bruce Willis, Hugh Jackman, Josh Brolin or maybe Daniel Craig. [I would enjoy seeing Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") in any picture. He would make a great Rick if not for the gorgeous accent. Perhaps he could have a small role in the cafe?]. None of the actors you listed above is the right man for the part. As for Ilsa -- Collard would be a brilliant choice.
Instead of sequel, couldn't they just try for a "Casablanca-esque" type thing? IMHO keep your mitts off perfection and seek originality. To paraphrase John Waters, don't remake perfect pictures, remake the ones that failed, and try to make them get them right....

I would not cast any of the big names. None of them fit the type of actor Bogart was. Plus, their celebrity detracts from the role. I would go with a lesser known. Someone who has that intensity in his eyes.
I believe Josh Brolin could play Rick an Zoey Deshanel could play Lisa.
