Actually, i would like to see Mary take an interest in someone in Season 4 who at first comes on strong then says thanks but no thanks. Not interested in marrying anyone who can be so horrid to her sister, Edith.

Very disappointed with the ending of the 3rd season. Mathew dying??? Does every new born child at Downton need to lose a parent. That's crazy. I'm sure the writers can be more creative. Or hopefully they'll renew his contract for one more season. That would be Wonderful

Well I watched no spoiler alerts and had no idea about Stevens not signing on for Season 4. Broadway must really have something he's always wanted for him to walk away from this. Very disappointing. I watched him driving away from the hospital and knew an accident was on the way but I was left thinking medical care brought him back from a hopeless situation in the war so why not now. Mary will never be a good mother now. Rose will be the center of scandal at the Abbey second only to Edith running off to London to her editor boyfriend. Tom Branson will really have to step up to save the place without Matthew's business head. I said I'd watch but its become worse than a soap opera so I'm no longer sure I need more.

I FEEL COMPLETELY MANIPULATED. From the beginning, the relationship between Mary and Matthew has been the centerpiece of many episodes. Always teasing the audience with their obvious attraction to one another but making sure they were never able to get together for one reason or another. Finally the glorious proposal and subsequent marriage taking the audience's unmitigated joy to unbelievable bliss followed by the birth of their first child. And THEN you stab us in the heart with killing off Matthew? This is much too painful. Life is difficult enough without being manipulated into taking this roller coaster ride from extreme joy to unmitigated sorrow. You cannot play around with people's emotions like that. I will not watch Downton Abbey's continuing episodes.

Mr. Stevens still has a chance to remain on season 4 - yes he was in a car accident at the end of season 3, but we don't know for sure that he is really dead. If the actor decides to stay on for another season (please on please decide to Mr. Stevens!) then the character could receive medical attention and live! At least that is what I'll tell myself until the UK grants the US the ability to watch season 4 for ourselves and I can see what will happen :)

Of course, spoilers are all over the internet...I think the US and the rest of the world should be able to watch the series at the same time. Now, that I know what I know about Matthew...the 3rd season, which starts here on Jan. 6, 2013, will not be the same. Even though I didn't look for the spoilers...they popped up anyway...FB, Twitter...etc.

Now, I'm in shock that Matthew is gone. It looks like Mary should be renamed as Typhoid Mary...first Patrick dies on the Titantic...then the Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk dies in her bed...now, her husband dies just after seeing his newborn son. Whew...girl, stay at home...leave men alone, too. The writing needs to pickup ... the slack and bring in another strong maie ...not Branson...he's tooooooooo something else to fill that role.

    HI,

Can't believe you've killed off Matthew. I'll find it hard to continue watching. In an era of complete social recession and meltdown these programs are the few delights left to common people. Why, why, why did you have to do it. Because Dan Stevens got himself another job or in order to keep the constant parade of new characters rolling by.
To say I disappointed is an understatement. I did like the series but now you've lost me, you've kill off Sybil isn't that enough to death, you still have that story like active and live with Branson's grief. Now Mary to to remain a spinster single mother ??? Ugh.

    *wouldn't

The only affect would be that I would want to watch Dan after he left...and I heard he is trying to make it in the U.S.- he shouldn't upset his fans.

Dan Stevens has a long and wonderful acting career ahead of him. He is a clever fellow - I think he'll realise the value of continuing in Downton Abbey for season 4, and reconsider. He doesn't need to rush to Hollywood. He would do well to consider taking another year to complete the Downton series (which helped launch him) -- before he moves on to many other interesting projects.

Those are biased questions. I answered that I would keep watching, but I don't agree with the premise of me not liking it. It depends how he is written off for me to make that judgement.

They've so far spent the entire series , drilling into our heads that Matthew's the heir to the estate and the title...Setting up Matthew to one day take over as Earl of Grantham...

If Matthew were written out, and Dan left... doesn't that kind of mess up the main plot of the show?
