Is now the time to revisit gun laws?

Whenever we have a tragic event we always need a scapegoat. It's easier to blame an inatimate object than to blame the person who committed the offense. Would it have really mattered how these children were killed? A gun, a knife, a bomb, a fire? A sick human being committed an unforgiving offense against those who we hold precious. On the same day in China, 20+ children were stabbed by a sick person. How do you prevent a crazy person from doing something like this? Disarm law abiding citizens hoping no one else will ever go crazy? Prevent the sale of knives? It makes no sense by making more laws restricting the use of these guns. They are used by the millions in marksmanship competitions, hunting, and self defense. Because of the actions by a few, are we willing to tell the many that you must forfeit, or restrict your property, just in case someone else goes crazy? The media and some politicians have added to the handwringing. They are demanding that we've got to do something! Gun control is the easiest and quickest 'feel good' quick fix regardless of whether it's the best long term solution . The real problem involves the mass closing of mental health institutions, lack of rehabiltation and treatment for people in need of these services, and lack of early warning indicators. Until we can identify these people with mental needs, making a quick new law will do nothing to prevent this senseless violence.

the true issue is not gun control its idiot control, if you own purchase firearms keep them in a gun safe cabinet apply trigger lock mechanisms and always keep the keys or codes on you the owner at all times, keep the ammunition locked up as well, its called being a responsible gun owner, if any member of your family living in the household has psychological issues or is showing signs of some type of unnatural routine or exhibits signs of instability seek help for them any way possible, if they have problems in school college(ie) bullying as them being the victim, or if you notice them showing any sign something is wrong make sure they donot gain access to the firearms or any dangerous ordinances that can cause harm to others.

the problems resolutions start with responsibility and prevention,

quit blaming music movies and video games those are entertainment and need to be explained as such those are fantasy worlds this is the real world there is no 5 lives continue on re-spawn there is no go back button or cancel actions. and if people can not differentiate between the two then they need to be taught, the other problem is people are to lazy to teach those differences time to grow up people the key word is RESPONSIBILITY of ownership and responsibility to each other to help learn this lesson.

Taking our rights away is not the answer. People kill people, not guns.

I do believe that things need to change. But not by taking our guns away. Do we blame a drunk driver or the car? So are we gonna blame guns or the person with the gun? Maybe instead of saying "oh there is something wrong with that guy, lets just let him off because he is crazy" maybe going back to hanging or the electric chair would scare people from killing and doing crimes!

Guns don't kill people. People kill people!

The politicization of this tragic event sickens me. You have the moonbat liberals screaming for an "assult weapons" ban. HELLO YOU MORONS. THE SICKO LEFT THE RIFLE IN THE CAR. He did what he did with handguns. The new communists fear a well armed citizenry. Sporting rifles because they keep the balance of power where it should be, with the people. THAT IS THE BRILLIANCE OF THE 2ND AMMENDMENT. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HUNTING BAMBI.

Its sad to what has happen i have a 5yr old son and its scary to take hime to school anymore but any how im a NRA member and CCW holder which i carry 24/7. and im sick and tired of hearing about gun control. criminals will find or steal them. THE ONLY THING THAT GUN CONTROL DOES IS MAKE US LAW ABIDING CITIZEN MAD AND HARDER FOR US TO BUY GUNS. so no its not time to change anything other than letting CCW holders carry every ware thanks -Marvin R-

The same thing recently happened in China but the person used a knife, if someone wants to commit this type of thing they will do it. The problem isn't guns or the current laws, the problem is that there are people who do bad things in the world.

its not the guns that kill it the retarded humans, if you think taking guns away then i'm moving out of this country, look back to the people of huricane katrina with all the looting cause people could'nt defend their selves, the FIRST thing you ban is alcohol and cell phones thanks

we need to be able to treat our kids the way I got disciplined as a child you never heard of someone going off in a school, theater or anywhere else for that matter of fact.took spanking out of school and look what we got a bunch of disrespectful brats.
god and a good butt whipping will change things not stricter gun laws.

What happened last Friday was the act of a mad man. Someone mentally disturbed that was on a mission to kill. All the new gun laws you could possibly imagine would not have stopped him. This is not a gun issue, this is a mental health issue. We should be talking about what could be done to prevent someone from thinking that killing innocent people is the answer to their problems. We should not be talking about new laws that have already been proven to not work. If you don’t agree, research the crime rates in Australia since ALL guns were banned.

Taking away guns isn't going to do anything. Guns will become as big of problem as drugs. Selling them underground. Guns do not kill people. People do. Never have you ever heard of a gun pulling its own trigger. If someone is sick enough to shoot up 20 small children, they're goin to find a way to do it. You are not going to be able to completely eliminate the problem of people killing other people. The only thing you can do is try to prevent it by beefing up security and things of that nature. Completely taking guns away will only cause even MORE problems.

I wish that people would realize that all the gun issues they are looking at only effect the law abiding citizens. It is absolutely terrible what happened in Connecticut and my heart goes out to the families and the town. But law abiding citizens are not the problem, it's the bad guys that do these things. The people that legally carry firearms are the ones that will protect the innocent people from harm. You can bet that if there were some armed parents there, a lot of lives would have been saved.

We need to address ways to help identify and treat mental health issues, even if we banned the sale of certain firearms sick people will find a way to get their hands on the tools they need to do their evil deeds. Firearms don't kill people any more than cars cause drunk driving deaths. Furthermore our schools and other public places need a better safety plan, society accepts armed guards for Armored cars and Banks, why not our schools. Do we put more value on our money than human life?

it is very sad what happened but gun control is not going to help if teachers and principals were able to carry the shooting in schools would have stoped after the first time. i also have a 11yr old in school and i worry about him more now im thinking about taking him out of school and home school him . were i went to school we did not have fights and no bullying we had armed security that shoud be put in every school i seen on the news were a man with a knife went into a school and killed young children no guns to stop him all gun were baned .it also makes me sick that you don't hear much when a concealed carry stops some one from being killed i think if more ppl carryed there would be less crime in the world and the government has been trying to put a ban on guns for years if thay do get a ban the government mite as well get all our military troops back theres no reason for the men and women to die for freedom me will not have...thank you for your time father of to

In reference to the automatic weapons I meant 'not needed.

  • Sue - 11 years ago

When the 2nd Amendment was conceived, it was a different time with different type guns. A musket cannot compare to the automatic assault weapons that private citizens can own today. For what purpose does the average American citizen need the assault weapons? Only military and police officers should have the right to have these weapons. Our gun laws need to be revised.

  • ChrisM - 11 years ago

I agree with R sajovic. Those weapons are needed by the general public. 'Donations' from the NRA to most of our government officials will stop the Brady Act from being reinstated.

  • holly - 11 years ago

having more gun laws isnt going to solve the problem. If a criminal wants to use a gun to kill, they will get their hands on a gun one way or another. we need a different approach. punishing the good guys isnt going to stop the violence.

  • Dan - 11 years ago

No changing gun laws won't solve this issue. If you take away the guns then take away the cars, alcohol, and cell phones at the same time. The major problem stems from mental health issues and they need to improve that area. Parenting at home and not being a friend will also help this situation and being aware of what is going on and around you. When I was in school which was a long time ago we had a rifle team for the school and we carried our rifles with ammo in your lunch box and put them in our locker until we went and shot at the range after school. No one and I mean no one ever thought of doing anything wrong it was respect the weapon and people around you. Video games or movies don't help this society either.

  • R sajovic - 11 years ago

Nobody except military or police should be able to own or carry a semi automatic weapon.. There is no need
