Should Illinois legalize gay marriage?

Opposing gay marriage does not require support from a religious text. Obama claims to be a Christian, so we naturally have a right to use the Bible to point out his deceptions. No nation in history prior to our spinning-top era moved to support gay marriage.
The Old Testament laws of the Jewish nation no longer apply to us, but basic morality is inherent and thus God–given:

    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+2%3A14-15&version=NIV
    Romans 2:14-15
    New International Version (NIV)
14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

The apostle Peter had a vision (Acts 10) that informed Christians that the separation of Jews from Gentiles through special dietary laws — and by extension all other visible signs of separation, such as mixing different fibers in clothing or punishments such as death for adultery — was no longer needed. The ancient Jewish nation no longer exists. But moral principles that are ours by nature must still be followed by Christians and by all other people who want to live in civilized societies:

    http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+10&version=NIV
    Acts 10
    New International Version (NIV)
34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.

Get it out of your systems, anti-gay bigots.

My point is, if you wanna use the bible, you can't just use the parts you like. Hope you don't wear fabric blends or eat shellfish either. Enjoy all those concubines!

Your bible is yours and not mine. Keep it out of the laws. The laws are for everyone, not just your religion. Take a history class. That's why this country was founded.

    10. Kill blasphemers

One who blasphemes the name of the LORD shall be put to death; the whole congregation shall stone the blasphemer. Aliens as well as citizens, when they blaspheme the Name, shall be put to death. (NRSV)

    Leviticus 24:16

    9. Kill adulterers

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. (NIV)

    Leviticus 20:10

    8. Kill female sorcerors

You shall not allow a woman to live who practices sorcery. (AMP)

    Exodus 22:18

    7. Kill rude children

Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death. Such a person is guilty of a capital offense. (NLT)

    Leviticus 20:9

    6. Kill people that work on Saturday

You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to the LORD. Anyone who works on that day must be put to death. (NLT)

    Exodus 35:2

    5. Kill women who have sex before marriage

“If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her, and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,’ … and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones … (NKJV)

    Deuteronomy 22:13-14,20-21

    4. No birth control

Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her; raise up offspring for your brother.” But since Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, he spilled his semen on the ground whenever he went in to his brother’s wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother. What he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also. (NRSV)

    Genesis 38:6-10

    3. Slavery is OK

Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. (NIV)

    Leviticus 25:44

    2. Women are inferior to men

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. (NIV)

    1 Timothy 2:11-12

This is what the bible says about gays. Of course if you don't believe in the bible then you are not a Christian. So would be the end of the discussion.

. Romans 1: 24 - 27 24Wherefore God gave them up also in the lusts of their hearts to uncleanness, to dishonour their bodies between themselves: 25who changed the truth of God into falsehood, and honoured and served the creature more than him who had created it , who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26For this reason God gave them up to vile lusts; for both their females changed the natural use into that contrary to nature; 27and in like manner the males also, leaving the natural use of the female, were inflamed in their lust towards one another; males with males working shame, and receiving in themselves the recompense of their error which was fit

1 Corinthians 6: 9 - 10 9Do ye not know that unrighteous persons shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who make women of themselves, nor who abuse themselves with men, 10nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor abusive persons, nor the rapacious, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

    1 Timothy 1 : 8 - 11
8Now we know that the law is good if any one uses it lawfully, 9knowing this, that law has not its application to a righteous person, but to the lawless and insubordinate, to the impious and sinful, to the unholy and profane, to smiters of fathers and smiters of mothers; to murderers, 10fornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers; and if any other thing is opposed to sound teaching, 11according to the glad tidings of the glory of the blessed God, with which *I* have been entrusted.

That is a very good point. Why hide your name and make hateful statements. You should be proud.

  • Miguel Moreno - 11 years ago

And see the bigots all use aliases on here. I'm proud of my beliefs and won't hide behind the Internet, you cowards.

  • Aitor Gonzalez - 11 years ago

Wow, it never amazes me how many people come out of the woodwork to show their disdain for something that does not affect them. Many individuals will take the time to quote a Bible, or quote a study, or just spew some random fact they overheard on Fox News, or the radio, and feel that those ideas are all correct, but in fact, it is wrong. These individuals are not homophobic, but rather "homo-ignorant". Your religion, your political views tell you that we are evil and wrong, but why? Simply because we love the same sex. That is all. We are against "nature's purpose", since we can't normally procreate, but again, that is wrong. I believe that homosexuality is nature's answer to overpopulation. We don't accidentally get, or cause, pregnancies, like heterosexuals, but rather choose to procreate. Look at the many species of the Earth that exhibit homosexual behavior. We do not condemn them, for it is in their nature to do so. Because your "God" tells you that it is wrong, it is OK to impose that belief onto me? When is that ever alright? When is it ever correct to impose what I believe to be your hateful religious belief onto anyone? This country has the 1st Amendment that protects this country from establishing any religious laws. As Miguel Moreno said, if you do not want to marry a gay person, don't marry one. It is very simple. We do not impose our life or beliefs onto anyone, and we respect the fact that you don't agree, but we do not need your approval. We are human, and we love the same as anyone. If you can't understand that, then it's about time that you folks wake up, turn off Fox News & Rush Limbaugh, and go outside and greet your fellow man. We can only make this country better by uniting together, and giving everyone equal rights. Be fortunate that your rights are not questioned, nor are your motives to want those rights. Be thankful that you live in a country that allows you to practice your bigotry freely, but do not think that you can impose those beliefs onto me, folks. Shame on you. I don't believe in Christianity, nor any religion for that matter, but I do believe in the message in that I love you, and hope that you love me and share that love with everyone, and hopefully we can stand united, equally, and loved.

Yes, marriage equality should be legal in Illinois, in fact, it should be the law of the land. When a same sex couple travels from one state to another they have a different set of protections in each state, or no protections at all in some states. This raises concerns if one has to be hospitalized in another state. The other person may or may not have the legal ability to make medical decisions on behalf of the partner in the hospital. When my partner and I travel, we bring a stack of legal documents along. Opposite sex couples do not need to worry about their legal status in any given state. Until we have full marriage equality nationwide, we have two classes of citizens in a country that espouses liberty and justice for all.
I applaud President Obama and the Illinois legislators who support marriage equality.

Johnblaze, you sound like a fucking idiot. Who cares if they have gay pride parades? It's no different than having a parade every year for a town celebrating their 100th year, or a homecoming parade. They are just doing what every other American would do to celebrate something that means the world to them. Also, not all GAYS flaunt it, and if they do, its because they are proud of who they are. Once again no different than someone wearing an Obama or Romney T-shirt. They are just showing their support, once again. Also, how are gay people ungrateful? Because THEY want to be treated equal, like everyone else? Also, why is it fair for some people to get married 3 or 4 times? When ONE gay person can't marry their partner of so many years? So take your uneducated ass out of here and come back with something that is worth reading. MERICA

At various times during the history of the U.S. the following groups were not allowed to marry in at least some states: African Americans, deaf people, inter-racial couples, and same-sex couples. Discrimination against the first three groups is part of the dustbin of history and few people would wish to return to the past. Restrictions on same-sex couples will be the last to go. Loving committed same-sex couples in the District of Columbia, 9 US states, all 10 provinces and 3 territories in Canada, and in about ten other countries can marry. It is time to make it universal.

  • Miguel Moreno - 11 years ago

Oh, right, "Truth is bitter pill." Your argument is ridiculous. You can't compare you marrying your cat, and a couple marrying after a 14 year committed relationship. Leave the Internet to people with brains and go back to screwing your cat, weirdo.

I would also love to point out all the grammatical errors in the anti gay marriage comments. Clearly we are dealing with an educated bunch of non bigots.

  • Johnblaze - 11 years ago

Im sorry but i think its disgusting to see all these gay people flaunting their gayness in everybody faces like gay pride parades and what not. Who cares if u are gay? Why parade that around for the world. I dont dislike gay people i just hate the flaming gay show offs. And i dont want to see that shit. Its not normal and its not right. U shouldnt be able to marry. Why? Its already nasty that u get civil unions ungrateful bastards.

  • JJRyan - 11 years ago

Seriously, this is NOT something we should still be fighting over. It is the right of an American citizen, period. This state by state approval is a pacifier. Until marriage between ALL consenting adults is legal on a Federal, level the argument about equality isn't even a valid argument. That's like saying it's ok to treat people fairly in one place, but not in another. Where is THAT EQUAL? It just simply isn't. Sometimes isn't equal. It's a temporary pacifier at best. I am not begging for anyone's tolerance. I DESERVE their indifference. President Obama, you say you want everyone treated equally, Sir, then please practice what you preach. Equality on a federal level, period. It's our right, not a privilege.

  • James C. - 11 years ago

Dear "bitter": Animals and children cannot legally consent, so there can be no consensual relationships. But regardless, slippery slope arguments like yours are logical fallacies. Instead of arguing about the issue at hand (an argument you might feel you're losing), you're arguing about your own invented issues (where you feel you might win).

If someone were to say black people are worthless and tearing this country apart and they should be denied all but the right to serve white people. Sounds wrong right? This is what all people who disagree with gay marriage are like. Even if not so extreme its still the same.

  • Truth is Bitter pill - 11 years ago

If this is a human rights issue do we also legalize human and animal sex couples? The animals don't seem to mind and the humans ......well its their human right isn't it? How about adult and child sex relationship? There can't be anything wrong with that now can there? If they both want it who are we to determine if its right or wrong? There must be a way to justify it through the constitution or just ammend the constitution to accept it. We are becoming illogical to morals which don't exist anymore because we are pursuing a freedom of expression and freedom of rights agenda. Yes it is a religious discussion because a church / mosque or any other wedding is religious which had a traditional ceremony. A marriage is different and doesn't require religion. Religious / Spiritual people don't seem to have the right to the same freedom of expression but that is no,surprise. If they did it to Jesus, we expect them to do it to us

  • David - 11 years ago

...respectfully people, this isn't a religious issue, THIS IS A CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUE...every U.S. citizen is guaranteed inalienable rights by the U.S. Constitution, The Bill of Rights and the 14th Amendment...EVERY CITIZEN, regardless of faith, gender, race, sexual orientation, has the same rights...but there is a nasty history in the U.S. of the "majority" denying the rights of certain minorities, i.e. African Americans, Latinos, Women, LGBT people...and some Americans think that we live in a Christian theocracy (one religion) and we don't...all Americans ought to be able to marry the person they love...if your particular belief or religion doesn't support gay marriage, that's OK and you are entitled to your belief...but NOBODY is entitled to mess with the civil rights of other Americans...period.

I respect your option to worship your god in your life. I should not be forced to abide by your religion. We have freedom of religion in the us. Marriage is a civil human right. A document at a courthouse legally binding a union. What you do in your church is your business and no one wants to take that from you. So please respect others as you would like them to respect you. If you are against gay marriage, then do not marry a person of the same sex. Plain and simple. I don't vote on what you do in your relationship, and you shouldn't decide what I do in mine.

The break down of the family is the down fall of this country. God created man and woman totally different in body make up . He created them to enjoy each other. He created different body parts to be enjoyed by a man and woman in a beautiful way that only God has designed. The Bible is clear about this and the Bible is the words of God that God gave to man to but down in pen for all the world to read. The devil is working overtime in this country he twist everything and makes it sound like the right thing to do. The killings in Conn. are a terrible thing everyone is upset about it but every day thousands of babies are killed by abortion. Wake up America it is up to us to follow what God has laid out for us in the 10 Comandments.

  • W. Barker - 11 years ago

I think the comment from Mr. John S. Horvath speaks volumes about those who oppose equality.

  • Floyd - 11 years ago

I personally think that people should be able to marry who they want. Marriage rights are human rights not a privilege, and i find it very hurtful many people think homosexuals will go to hell, there are many Catholic, Lutheran, and even Morman homosexuals. I realize that in the bible I has said that a man shall not lie with another man, but it also says man shall not praise anything made by man, the bible is made by man, it may be the word of god, but that word of god was interpreted through the words of man. The bible is purely a document of history, not of beliefs.
I do say sorry to any Christians that take offense to what i have said. I realize not all of the Christians are like this. I am purely saying being a Christian means accepting everyone and anything as their own beliefs because the only person/being/ devine power is the lord Jesus christ, and God, our holy father.
