The next time Lou goes "before the court" please have him explain if he REALLY believes it is fair to let Notre Dame play in the BCS championship game without playing and winning a conference championship game of any kind. Don't let him "weasel around" claiming ND's "tough schedule." Corner him and ask him how he thinks an "independent" has it tougher than a school in a big time conference does. I submit Penn State as a classic example. When they held "independent" status their record was much better on a consistant basis. (Handing out defeat after defeat to Lou himself!) However, once PSU joined the Big Ten and had the conference grind to deal with, they settled in to a 3rd place team and have only been in the national title hunt twice since. The simple fact is that teams in conferences play "independent" teams as "off games." It is nice to win those games but they pale in importance to winning the conference games, conference championship, etc.
It is indisputable that teams which play in tough conferences and then are forced to win a championship game before being considered for the BCS championship game have a way tougher "road to hoe."
Holtz stated that he believed that for any team in the country to play in the BCS championship they "HAD TO WIN THEIR CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME." Any team that is, EXECPT ND. This kind of rampant favoritism towards one school makes a mockery of any system the NCAA uses to determine a national champion.
It is time to stop the cowering to ND on every issue! It doesn't matter how many idiotic subway alumni as well as friends in the eastern elite media they have. If they are going to participate in events like the BCS championship game, then they should, by all things fair, have to traverse the same path as every other school. For the NCAA to allow them to do otherwise is shame. They don't even have to play the same number of games to qualify!
Do y0u honestly think that Lou Holtz would stand by and accept it if the tables were reversed? How about making ND play in, let's say the SE conference. Make them win their division, AND win the conference championship game just to qualify to play in the BCS championship game. Meanwhile, let every other team in the country play a 12 game "independent" schedule and sit back with an automatic bid to the BCS championship game. If you don't think you can understand a word Lou says now, try that scenario and see how he sounds. It is time to end the charade.
