i have alot of sympathy with this campaign - there are far too many cats around. however the solutionn may be simpler than so far suggested. my sister has a lurcher cross - called dexter - who has a pathalogical hatred of cats - so far he has killed 6 outright (with a number of maimings) to my sisters knowledge - but in reality it must be many many more. the latest was one who passed through 'his' back garden which he tore to pieces. he is not violent to people by the way - or other dogs - just any other living species and especially cats. so gareth, the answer could lie in dexters dna.

Cant believe this stupid idea about killing cats and offering cash incentives to do so for conservation reasons.... the human race does more damage to the natural environment, climate and endangered species than any animal could manage... get a grip Morgan... I heard you were smart!

People who support this are completely ignorant. I am embarrassed for you.

Good on Gareth Morgan for firmly entrenching himself as New Zealand's biggest douche bag. Reading the comments here in support of this poorly reasoned and thought out plan shows what most of us have known for a while; Gareth Morgan attracts those at the lower end of the intelligence spectrum.

Domestic cats in New Zealand are a non-native introduced species that spreads rapidly (up to four litters per year), causes economic and environmental harm, as well as harm to human health. Domestic cats worldwide may have been involved in the extinction of more bird species than any other cause except habitat destruction, according to the publication from the University of Wisconsin - Madison (web1.cnre.vt.edu/extension/fiw/wildlife/damage/Cats.pdf).

Cats cause nuisance by sound, smell, fouling and damage to property by urine spraying on outdoor furniture, disturbing rubbish bags, defecating in vegetable gardens and in flowerbeds. Cats do not need to roam free, and this view is even supported by Humane Society of the United States (see http://www.humanesociety.org/news/magazines/2011/01-02/peaceable_backyard_kingdom_protect_cats_wildlife_01032011.html). They point out that average lifespan of an outdoor cat is significantly less than his indoor-only counterpart.

For an example of cat licensing laws consider example of Toronto, Canada where cat-licensing fees are comparable to dog fees (see http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/licensing.htm):
    Male/Female, Unaltered:$60.00 dog$50.00 cat
    Male/Female, Sterilized:$25.00 dog$15.00 cat

Actually yes our native birds are much more important than cats..here in Titirangi as i write, my neutered, registered dog is safe inside.meanwhile my neigbours cat is outside, again spraying under my house, using my vege garden as a toilet and harrassing the tui nests all around.cats and their owners should be erradicated.

The excellent description of the demise of the NZ Stephens Island Wren by the murderous lighthouse keepers cat along with appropriate references is found on the Why Evolution Is True website. it should be compulsory reading for thoser cat owners who avoid the responsibilty of ensuring their bloody animals do not come onto my property - where they are treated appropiately. Have any of you who think this is a good idea ever:

    heard of Natural Selection?
eaten a chicken, turkey, duck, goose, phesant, squab etc?
started a website to microchip and neuter all the people who do eat them?
tried to get a bird to curl up in your lap, purring and offering love and warmth?
boarded up all those evil windows that birds fly into and break their necks?

Really, folks, maybe we should just eat the cats which would help keep the population down.

Keep it up - other SPCAs think TNR is bad policy - see report here. http://kb.rspca.org.au/What-is-trap-neuter-return-and-is-it-an-appropriate-strategy-for-the-management-of-unowned-cats_462.html

We 5 neighbours (rural) have a cat free policy !! We love our native birds birds more !!!
And oh la la what birds we have !!! A cat with a bell on will still stalk and terrorise birds. And the bell only rings as the cat is actually leaping to kill the bird. I guess people have to ask themselves what do they want more either native birds and birds in general or predator killer cat ?? Because we can't have both.
Rats and mice ???? , and have followed mankind since we walked before the ice. Mouse-traps and Rat-traps are cheap and reliable, more so than your average overweight lazy neutered 'tom'. I don't buy the lame rats and mice excuse.
NZ has a shocking record of native bird decline which worsens as we speak, and cats are the number 1 reason for this.
    So be brave people,
    AND GO CAT FREE.

I wasn't aware that the SPCA was doing that with the cats and good on you for making the public aware of this. I for one can't stand them although I have had a cat as a pet and I did love her at the time but I have never had another again since.

I am one of those who can't stand cats on my property and think that if you can't tie it up like a dog has to be then it should have the same consequences a dog would if it was seen roaming.

I live in Titirangi and when I sit on my balcony I hear and see few birds. We do trap possums and occasionally catch rats. As well my neighbour has 4 cats. When my dog was alive, she was locked inside as it's impossible to fence our steep bush clad section but I faithfully walked her twice a day. Dogs are required to be under control at all times and chipped. This is called responsible ownership. None of my neighbour's cats have bells which I think is irresponsible in our area. Why are cats allowed to roam 24/7 when they do catch wildlife? I hear more birds sitting on the balcony of our family bach in Coromandel because there are no cats! And yes, I do like cats but I decided when I moved here that it wouldn't be a good idea to own one.

"I do not understand why people think I hate cats"...
Maybe because your OWN campaign is called "cats to go"?
Also you used a picture of a kitten on your website of a kitten with devil horns and red eyes trying to make out like the kitten was a devil, you have since removed the photo, and changed your stance on the whole situation, interesting..

You have BLOCKED anyone on your Facebook page including myself from having a different opinion, which is ridiculous, and just shows you do not have enough evidence to challenge anybody so you back off like a coward that you are and hide behind the media.

Cats may catch birds sometimes, it is sad, but it is NATURE, it is the circle of life!
The motor ways constantly being built using tax payers money is made by HUMANS and cars every day run over hundreds of birds, all over the roads in NZ, far more than any cats kill.

Humans are the biggest threat to the environment and as usual here is another human such as yourself trying to put the blame onto cats.

You want to force people to confine cats inside everyday for the rest of their lives because according to your research every cat catches 60+ birds and other species every year.

Last I checked, you are NOT god, you have no right to tell ANYONE that the bird species is more important than cats, they are ALL gods creatures and to be honest, if anything or anyone is "to go" it is you Gareth Morgan.

    Yours sincerely,

Another Kiwi ashamed and disgusted that this is all you can come up with, and you dare not let anyone challenge you, it's pathetic.
