Herein lies the problem with Eric Wedge. Can you imagine Lou Piniella handing Smoak a job he hasn't earned at all despite years of patience? This kind of "vote of confidence" move is very Melvinesque in my book. And it is pathetic.
I think Wedge is a pretty good guy, but if we still had a manager who commanded the respect of players, you would see fewer big name players avoiding Seattle as a place to play baseball.
