    That's funny, Bill. I think many would happily join the "butters" group!
    But why do we accept this pattern in writing so much more readily than "And..." or other conjunctions in the initial position?

    In the area of the UK I came from, us locals were sometimes known as 'butters'.
    We started many sentences with 'but'.
    We are not illiterate and have produced many literary geniuses.
    Perhaps we were prone to this habit.
    BUT we can laugh at ourselves!
