Rep. Sandack - not Standack. I apologize.

I realize this vote is only symbolic, but I find it poignant indeed. Rep. Standack is an advocate for gay marriage and Joe Walsh is an arch conservative on social issues and they are running neck and neck as the leading vote getters as of Saturday afternoon. That simply mirrors the state of the party - we are divided on social issues. Rep. Standack represents a considerable constituency that shares his viewpoints as does Joe Walsh. Neither are "right" and neither are "wrong". Social issues are deeply personal and what is right for one person may not be right for the next. Equally important is that our views are subject to change over time. Ergo: The Platform of the state GOP should not address social issues, particularly ones which divide the party. It was Abraham Lincoln who said, "A house divided cannot stand." and his words were very prophetic for the state GOP. The party needs Rep. Standback and his constituency and it needs Joe Walsh and his constituency. The good news is that the sooner the electorate gets the message that the Republican party is just like the rest of the nation - divided on social issues - we can shake off the "branding" that has cost us too many elections. The new Chairman, however, can't be someone who is identified with either side of divisive issues, rather someone who can make the tent big enough for all sides of the debate to reside and engage in respectful discourse.

Anyone who participates in the process is to be commended. The problem that I see, very respectfully, is that social issues have been our Achilles Heel. It's not as simple as jumping from one position to the other as the electorate is pretty close to evenly split on some issues. Ergo: You can't gain the support of one side without losing the support of the other. We can't afford to alienate any voters. We need a Chairman who can work with both sides of the debate on social issues, rather than being an open advocate for either side. We just are never going to have a consensus on social issues. Our Forefathers anticipated this and their solution was called "State's Rights". We have to tone down the debate in re social issues and concentrate on that which unites, rather than divides us - our economic agenda.

Ron Sandak provides the kind of thoughtful leadership that can attract the broad base of Illinois voters who share the party's stance on most issues but have felt left out of politics

The next Chairman must be someone who has the ability to work with people who have opposing view points - something Tim Schneider has a proven history of doing in the most contentious of arenas, the Cook County Board. The new Chairman should be a winner, not a loser of elections, as Tim Schneider has proven to be as a Republican Cook County Commissioner. The new Chairman should be someone who has the ability to get votes in Cook County, without which we receive approx 22% of we cannot win a state-wide race, and Tim Schneider is a proven vote getter in Cook County. Equally important - the new Chairman must be someone who isn't "branded" on the divisive social issues, rather someone who is capable of promoting tolerance, understanding & respect for different points of view and , again, that person is Tim Schneider.
