A pack of pit bulls is suspected of mauling a woman to death in the Antelope Valley. What's your view of the breed?

Almost any dog is a bomb waiting to go off. It's alright if you want to take your chances, but what about the risk to others? Would you be willing to forfeit your life if someone dies due to your "need" to own and keep a dog?

I've known couples who had a dog and got rid of it when the wife got pregnant. Should give you cause for thought.

L.A. + lots of Mexicans = lots of dogs bred / raised for fighting.

It's not the breed's fault. It's the fault of certain cultures here that feel the need to make these dogs the way they are. That same irresponsible attitude is reflected in other ways of life as well. Stereotypes exist for a reason.

AV is either white trash or hispanic thugs. I Know people who started families out there due to cheap housing and quickly said.. never again.. moved away... and took their kids the hell out of there.

I had a pit mix for 11 years. She was a great dog. There were a few people she didn't like, but all she did was sit across the room and growl at them. (One was my brother and the other my husbands brother) When they did go to pet her she rolled over and let them pet her belly. So aggressive, nope. She sounded all fierce at the gate when people came up to it, but if you reached out to pet her or anyone yelled at she'd stop.
We currently have a 2 year old Border Collie/Pit Mix. We got a year ago at the pound for my 8 year old daughter. She is the sweetest dog. Her temperment is more Collie than Pit. When people hear she has pit in her they look at me like I've lost my mind. Then they watch her play with my Yorkie who is aggresive (9yrs) and wonder why she lets him get away with what he does. He bites, snaps, growls and lunges a her. She ducks, dodges and keeps out of his way. Then goes right back to annoying him. It's her game with him and she understands that. I then get, "maybe not all pits/mixes aren't the same." It's amazing how they won't take the word of the owner and need to see for themselves.
Meanwhile I lock up my Yorkie when people come over. Mr. cute and small has bitten or attempted to bite more people than any of my other dogs. The difference is he calms down faster and I can pick him up. I've had 5 large breed dogs and 2 small ones over the years. He's more terror terrier than either of the pits I've had. Terriers are just feisty breeds wether it's a pit or a small Yorkie. Pound for pound I'd hate to see my Yorkie at 60lbs. I agree with the Tammy, I've taken food from the mouths of all my big dogs with no problem. If I wish to keep my fingers my little dogs can keep whatever is.

to John who left a comment regarding "chihuahua's". I beg to differ. I have two pit mixes and a chihuahua The chihuahua is 10 - 12 lbs and way meaner than either of the pitties. I do not hesitate for ONE MINUTE if either of my pitties have something in their mouth that they should not have, to reach in their mouth and remove whatever is in there. The chihuahua, i will hesitate. He growls at the pitties if they get too close to him if he is eating a snack; the pitties do not do this. He is the first to notice someone outside and the first to bark. Then he crawls up on my lap and just lays there. He. and my pitties are my boys. And no, the pitties do not bite the chihuahua for those of you thinking they do. He runs and plays with them like he was their size (they are both 75-80 lbs) and they KNOW he is smaller and react accordingly. I have seen it. Small dogs can be taught to tear something apart just as easliy as big dogs can, doesn't matter the bread. It is the owners who are not being responsible. One of my pitties sleeps in my bed (the other dogs would too but my bed isn't big enough!). Pitties are a wonderful breed providing they are raised properly by responsible people (and that does not mean people who want to fight them (Michael Vick types) or drug dealers who teach them to be mean to protect their illegal activities.

First, yes, there are a few bad dogs in every breed....not a specific bad breed! An entire breed is NOT THE PROBLEM!! We have a ton of bad humans but we cannot ban the entire human race or a certain race because of a bunch of criminals? Racial profiling is wrong and it doesn't work! This is what people are doing to these dogs. What gives us the right to ban a breed because there might be a few bad apples. Do you really think it is going to change anything? The bad humans will just claim another victim and teach that breed how to fight for money. We need to do more to protect these animals than making them out to be the monsters. The dogs are not the problem!!!!!
Second, when is society going to learn it is the HUMANS that are the problem. Look at the poor Vick dogs. Those dogs were fighting for their lives, literally. What would you do faced with that situation? Would you fight for your life or let someone beat you, starve you, rape you, and force you to kill/fight for food and water....the basic necessities. The Vick dogs are now in homes...with loving people and they are loving life. These dogs were not born that way....they were created and are forgiving of their past! I'm not saying that some dogs might have issues. EVERY breed has dogs that have behavior issues....but an entire breed cannot be bad. These dogs were called "nanny dogs' - for a reason. HUMANS have created this fear and this nightmare. These dogs just want love, a warm bed and bellyrubs. They are amazingly loving and remarkably forgiving. Racial profiling is wrong and this is exactly what is being done to this breed! It is the human behind the dog that should be punished. These dogs are loving, trusting and kind animals. Humans are the disgrace and should be ashamed of themselves for that has been done. First is was the doberman, then the german shepard and the rotweiller....now the pit. No, it's not the breed, look at the monsters that created the problem!!! THAT is where the punishment needs to start!
Sorry if I rant, this subject irritates the crap out of me because it is wrong on so many levels.

I had to help end an attack by a loving family nanny angel with a hammer (first thing I found in the garage)
it had attacked children at a bday party in front of everyone in the room and a dad jumped in and let it have his arm instead.... broke both his radius and ulna and 150+ stiches/staples. I heard real screaming and ran outside and saw him dragging it out of the house away from the kids and ran to help...
quick fact: keep a ballpeen hammer ready close if you want a pit and have kids

  • Rachel - 11 years ago

Pits are still on the top of the statistics for brutal attacks. And some of those were the "family pet". It's partly because they are a powerful dog, physically, and I am just not hearing enough "caution" on the part of Pitt owners. I keep hearing "oh he won't bite", or "he's just so sweet". We have been Rottweiler owners, they are second from the top on the statistics for brutal attacks. And we always took the risk for harm to others very seriously!!!!! But when you mix a powerful and sometimes impulsive breed with a naive dog owner, it's dangerous!

Laura, dogsbite.org is well known as a single issue, anti-pit bull website run by a single person with a clear agenda. I wouldn't trust any data you find there.

I almost didn't answer your survey. It's like asking, do you like chocolate even though it makes you fat.

My first dog was a pit lab mix. He was a total babe, Other dogs usually took a chunk out of him at the dog park. All he wanted was to be loved and run around.

My second pit bull, a blue nose, is also a babe. He didn't have a mean streak until a shepherd bit him. Now I keep him away from other dogs unless I can introduce them on my terms. He is a great companion and a total sweet heart. All he wants is to be petted and to have a ball tossed for him.

I would adopt a dozen of then except for societies perception of this beautiful breed.

I am so sorry for the Family of this tragedy. What on earth were the dogs out & loose for? Irresponsible owner should be tried for Murder, and for negligence of the dogs. Animals are just that - animals; they do not know or live by our Human rules. I live in a big City with tons of Pitties - most owners are very watchful & responsible, I've found them to be better trained & more friendly than my Beagle. I have no doubt in the wrong hands he could stoop to a "Pack Mentality" & do some serious damage. I NEVER leave him unattended or with a Stranger; if I wouldn't trust you with my Toddler I wouldn't trust you to take proper care & precautions with my Dog. The worst bite I ever received was from a Poodle; needed stitches. Please stop discriminating & singling out the breed - it helps no one.

  • Tone - 11 years ago

So Tony Bell wants to override state law (which bans any breed-specific legislation) to punish all owners of an awesome dog breed because nobody stepped in and dealt with this terrible dog owner after numerous reports about him raising his dogs to be aggressive? What a tool.

  • Lyn Huber - 11 years ago

I have a pit bull, and he is the most loving dog. I think that owner trained his dogs to protect the property to protect the weed. That poor lady surely shouldn't have died like that...I feel horrible for her and her loved ones. On the other side of that coin...those dogs were TAUGHT to be vicious which is a shame. I hope the irresponsible owner pays dearly for all of this tragedy...but it makes me sad that the dogs will pay too. I pray for the day when people realize its the bad owners fault and not the breed of the dog! PITT BULL ARE WONDERFUL DOGS!!!

I want to see that responsible owners get to have and care for these pets. But, let's find a way to make it harder for criminals to keep and abuse them. I'm not for banning any breed. But the fact is; a marijuana-grower's mistreated 4 *chihuahuas* wouldn't cause this tragedy.

Again, there has to be a way to ensure that breeds with the capability (or maybe even propensity) of this level of aggressiveness and power goes only to those that will love and cherish them.

  • Sharron Benson - 11 years ago

I should have pointed out too, the IGNORANT ones who voted DIDN'T Comment. Only those of us who ARE INFORMED. Kudos to all of you.

  • Sharron Benson - 11 years ago

IGNORANCE IS BLISS. Before you condemn, GET INFORMED. THIS IS THE PROBLEM - IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Worse yet, PERPETRATING LIES!!!!! People, I have worked in the veterinary field for 20 years - IT IS THE OWNERS. Any dog will bite - and FYI Chihuahuas are #!. You have to be responsible and socialize ANY dog.

  • Kona's Mom - 11 years ago

Shame on KNX 1070 for even considering having this kind of poll! How dare you dig for such ridiculous information solely to add to an already tarnished reputation of beautiful, wonderful animals. NO BAD DOGS, JUST BAD OWNERS!!!

(and apparently, bad radio stations) They just lost a loyal listener.

  • Dawn Savasta - 11 years ago

Very sad & preventable. All dogs have prey drive & when in a pack, that drive can become lethal (1 dog starts & the others will follow suit). They should NOT have been running loose, PERIOD. 100% the owner's (all of them) responsibility.

  • Barb Banegas - 11 years ago

I agree with Desirae, it's the responsibility of any dog owner to ensure the safety of the public. Blaming and banning one specific breed is not the answer to the problem. I'm the proud and responsible owner of 4 pit bulls myself. As with ANY dog they require obedience and training. Stop blaming the breed, blame the owner!

  • Desirae - 11 years ago

I do send out my condolences to the family of the 68 year old woman, it is as Susan has said, a tragic thing to lose someone, and I hope that her family gets the help that they need. I hope the finger that is pointed at the dogs is also pointed at their owner. Obviously he wasn't taking care of his dogs properly or else this would not have happened. I hope that if anyone takes anything away from this it's that people should look more into the owners than the dogs, obviously he had made them mean to protect his marijuana and probably the profits he was making from selling it. For those of us who are activists for the breed, redemption day will come, it may not be today, but soon they'll stop and think that maybe it's the owner's fault. And they can be added to the list of other dogs that were poorly thought of and banned upon like the German Shepherd or Great Dane. Until then, it's us responsible owners that need to pave a way to change people's minds.

  • Desirae - 11 years ago

This survey is screwed up. Seriously? Are pit bulls "dangerous"? No it's idiots who do not know what the hell they are talking about who give these wonderful dogs a bad name and it's idiots who make surveys like this that are biased towards one breed who need to take a step back and think. ANY dog is capable of hurting someone or even killing someone but the media just eats it up when it's a pit bull who bites and it's those people who give this breed a bad name. When do you hear about Golden Retrievers mauling people in the news? Not very often. Do they? Most definitely! Golden Retrievers, Labs and the more "family oriented" dogs are more known for biting people than pit bulls, but they're not a bully breed, so we don't hear about it. A friend of my family's German Shorthaired Pointer took a chunk out of their child's FACE and he needed over 20 stitches. Did it end up in the news? No, no it didn't. Because he wasn't a pit bull. And for those of you who think that they don't make good pets look at it this way, imagine if a chihuahua wasn't a little dog but a medium sized dog, but it still had the same attitude problem that they are known for, they'd be being euthanized left and right for attacks. I have a pit bull who was starved nearly to death, beaten, used as a breeding dog for pit bull fighting and to add onto that she's a "blue nose" which are supposably the more aggressive ones. She is the sweetest most loving dog I have ever met, she loves people and other animals, children large and small and the only thing she "bites" is her stuffed toys, and she'll back off as soon as you grab the toy. Does she sound like a dangerous dog? I'm more afraid of my parent's border collie lab mix going after someone or another animal than my pit bull. So before you judge the breed, take a step back and look at the person at the other end of the leash, because when your taking away dogs from good owners and killing them, there is something very wrong with the people who think that it's right.

  • Susan Edstrom - 11 years ago

First and foremost, this was a tragedy and to try to turn it into something against an entire breed of dog is inflammatory at the least. In addition, this survey is completely prejudicial focusing on the breed and not the owner. Any breed can be dangerous if they are treated poorly and abused. Based on the number of animals, it is likely the (scumbag) owner used them as breeding or fighting machines.

If you'll do your research, the majority of the dogs that survived the hands of Michael Vick and his cohorts are living happily with families and many are productive service dogs.

shame on you for jumping on a media bandwagon. It's a disservice to that young lady and the animals without knowing how they were raised and used.

  • Terry W Stoddard - 11 years ago

This poll by KNX 1070 is a prejudicial profiling in it's worst proportion!!! It should be taken down and time should be put into responsible reporting of such things as once there was a bad reporter that broke a law, therefore, all reports are criminals, True or False? KNX 1070, you should be ashamed of yourself!!!
