I fought for freedom, not "free stuff." I am gld that Lwes and Home Depot and others give a military discount -but it needs to be their FREE choice!

Government should NOT mandidate military discounts. In IL Home Depot & Lowes offer a 10% military discount with proper military ID. Menards does not and I do not shop there.

This idiot needs to take a look at what's going on in this country. Government mandated discounts? More government handouts at everyone else's expense? He is obviously an Obama want-a be. As a veteran I appreciate the discounts offered out of respect and appreciation.

Discount from retailers show appreciation, and are generally given out of the goodwill of the corporation or the local owners and managers not just to show appreciation, but to draw the segments of the population covered by the discounts into their establishments. This is another one of those areas the Government should just keep it's nose out of. As soon as something like a discount becomes mandatory by legislation of government pressure it really just becomes a defacto tax on the business. I actually do frequent establishments in my area that give military discounts more often than those that don't, not just to save money, but to reciprocate the appreciation. On a side note, as others have pointed out, both Lowes and Home Depot in my area give a military discount already.

Businesses should not be mandated by the government, local, state or federal, to give out discounts. Discounts are a private matter between the business and recipient. Businesses use discounts as goodwill towards certain groups of customers, whether veterans, EMS, teachers, students, seniors, etc.

FWIW, Home Depot and Lowes in Indiana and Texas give military discounts year-round.

This is something that the government should not be involved in. It should be entirely up to the business. If you try to force it down there throat they will only resent it. That being said, Home Depot and Lowe's already do this. At least the ones that I have been in.

The government should stay out of the private marketplace. The free market will self regulate if given the chance. As a side note: our local Home Depot and Lowes both give me 10% military discount all year here in Columbia, MO...that says a lot to me and helps me to feel good about considering making purchases from them all year round. - I wish the government would downsize and stick to the primary role of governing instead of meddling in the private affairs of the citizenry. - "The proper function of government is limited only to those spheres of activity within which the individual citizen has the right to act. By deriving its just powers from the governed, government becomes primarily a mechanism for defense against bodily harm, theft and involuntary servitude. It cannot claim the power to redistribute the wealth or force reluctant citizens to perform acts of charity against their will. Government is created by man. No man possesses such power to delegate. The creature cannot exceed the creator."

I don't want to see Big Government mandate companies to provide discounts to the military whether active or retired. What I would like to see is company's provide on their own a discount for the active or retired military members. Once word got out on that, I'm sure those companyies or businesses would be considered gold mines by the owners. Secondly, I would like to see government give military and veterans a break on their annual IRS taxes or better yet do not charge these brave men and women any taxes at all. This could all be funded by paying congress less and getting more done while they are in session.

I don't support government mandating this type of private company discounts.

I do support government identifying any company that has operated and profited in any way while our U.S. Armed Forces Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel protect their ability to do that.

I also support the government identifying the companies that do or do not support our Veterans and Active Duty Military Personnel and families and in what way.

We, as Veterans, Active Duty Military Personnel, and Family Members, may then make a decision to support or not support those companies by the way we choose to spend or invest our resources.

Gov't should not mandate that companies give Vets a discount. In NJ Lowes and Home Depot give Veterans a 10% discount with the proper ID everyday. Why make it a law that they have to do something that they do anyway?

Veterans have offered their life as national protection for the sake of our national liberty; we deserve to be honored by our congressional bodies.

That's all we need now.. Gov't intervention mandating private corporations to do something that they are already doing on their own dime and their own time. How can the Gov't legally dig into their profits like this when the margins are getting smaller every day?
