I've never painted a woodworking project. Didn't even use paint on my house (redwood siding), stripped and sanded and used a semi-transparent stain. It's lasted nearly 20 years now and when I refinish it won't need scraping. However, everything I have read about exterior finishes indicates that paint provides the most weather protection.

Have been using different colored india inks for color on several projects and it works great
