Should cable TV companies offer subscriptions to individual channels instead of bundling them?

A la carte channel selection is something we should have had 15 years ago with the roll-out of digital cable and mini sat. Today, it would simply be too little, too late.

The proliferation of television shows via on-demand services from cable and internet services as well as DVD rentals from kiosks and rent-by-mail services have already surpassed the flexibility that a la carte channel selection would provide. People today want to watch programming on their terms.

In addition, most cable channels have ruined themselves through the overuse of commercial advertising. How annoying is it to reach an emotional climax in a show, only for it to go to commercial break for 4-5 minutes? You lose the build up, and eventually interest in the show. Cable channels also love the annoying use of overlays at the bottom of your screen to advertise during the show. Lastly, how many hours are actually programming and not infomercials?

The only thing a la carte channel selection would be good for is lowering my bill to feed my DVR. Considering the alternatives, it’d just be easier to go without.
