We've been twice. I would go again in a heartbeat! The scenery is beautiful, and it is the last wild place in the USA. Once we flew in and rented an RV. It saved a lot of time, and given the price of gas, probably cost the same.

After two years, we have made the trip. We are workamping on the Kenai peninsula. We love how this dream has come true. All I can say is come with a plan, so there are no worries about where you're going, what you are going to see, and how much money you're going to spend. Come prepared as possible, and be ready for changes. We have been able to go on some amazing trips, side trips, and beautiful hikes. Have fun and plan, plan, and leave the door open for more fun.

My family left Massachusetts in 1976 and took the whole family rving to search for a better place to live due to the recession back then. Drove to Alaska and camped in Eagle River. Ended up living there 30 years and loved every minute - it was the land of opportunity and so many beautiful untouched places. Recommend going June/July of the year if going to visit (these are the warmest months). You can fish, hunt, pan for gold, or just enjoy the native arts and history. Great camping trails.
    You won't regret it!

We went in 2011. Took our Pleasurway on the Inside Passage Ferry to Haines then drove the loop to Dawson City, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali, Kenai Peninsula and back to Haines over 4 weeks. Fantastic scenery, 1 cracked windshild!

We have spent 16 days touring Alaska by boat, train and bus. We loved it and would go back except I doubt that we will get past other places we have not done for a return trip. If we do go I would not go in an RV. Alaska roads are really a challenge to keep an RV intact. Our bus driver when in Alaska said he constantly sees rv's broken down on the side of the road.

About a dozen of us are heading to Alaska in 2014. The plan is to leave from Great Falls in mid to late May and return to the Seattle area the end of August. My only prior trip to Alaska was a military stop over. My feet touched ground so I guess I have technically been there. After RV'ing Alaska next year I'll be taking a camping trip to Hawaii just to complete a bucket list of having camped in all 50 states. This is a big, beautiful country! To all, travel safe and have fun!!

We went in 2009. Still my favorite trip in the 6 years and 60,000 miles of RVing so far, so we are going back this summer.

The year I retired, I went to Alaska with Camp Alaska. Bring my sleeping bag and personal stuff. The itinerary was planned with options for additional exploring. It was ideal. I would do it the same way once again. Not sure I will go again.

As Jimmy said above, there is lots to see here in the lower 48. I doubt I will live long enough to see it all.
