Community Health Priorities (CHP) is a project of the Northwest Health Foundation. Our goal is to engage people all over the state to articulate a vision of a healthier life for everyone, and then develop policies that help us achieve that vision.
I believe in our area hunger and poverty are prime issues. In the schools, over 50% of the kids qualify for free or reduced lunches. This is only one measure and as the economy worsens and prices are higher, it is even harder for families to get by.
As a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness I am gratified but not surprised to find that mental illness including depression has receives the most votes as a public health priority. These illnesses represent the largest source of worker disability and affect 1 in 5 families. It would seem that the organ on which our human abilities most depend, our brain, should deserve a priority in funding for research and treatment far beyond current efforts.
