How does 'Supernatural' treat women?

I think Misha is both right AND wrong. The SHOW doesn't hate female characters, the fans do. ANY time the boys get a sex scene, hate mail for the female starts. Cassie, Dean's first love and a survivor of the show, was one of the first to really feel the heat. And she was never mentioned again.

Jo was a potential love interest and cue fandom hate. Even though the writing or the chemistry wasn't there (Alona had WAY better chemistry with Chris Kane) her days were numbered. And so it continued with Bella, Ruby (1.0 and 2.0), Anna, Becky. Meg wasn't spared either though she was embraced more because of BUABS (Jared was so creepy/ awesome in that one!!).

Not to mention someone made graphs depicting how many male v. Female deaths there have been and to catch up, Show would have to kill more than two times the amount of females in seasons seven and eight to catch up with the male death.

So Misha is right about misogyny, just wrong about who has it.

It's a freaking television show. Get over yourselves.

To add to my above comment, a lot of the same can be said about men. Benny, Ash, that chubby guy from Nightshifter, they all get killed off just as we started to like them. And we can't really say Castiel has "survived" five seasons, because he's been killed off multiple times as well. There are more women deaths on Supernatural, but the men who get too close to Sam and Dean die off just as easily.

At first I wanted to say that Misha was wrong, especially when I thought of Charlie. But then I thought that even Charlie had a very near death experience that the boys had to save her from. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Supernatural, I've been watching it since I was a kid with my mom. I know these characters like my own family and love them with all my heart, but when I think of women that have survived Sam and Dean's lives I draw a blank. Please don't count Amelia, she doesn't count because she was a mistake. But the only other serious romantic interest to survive is Lisa, and she had a her memory wiped and was placed far far away from our beloved Winchesters. All of that having been said, I don't beleive Supernatural HATES women, I just think more often than not the women of Supernatural are used as bargaining chips, bait, or a death to drive the boys to new and exciting heights. Or sometimes random senseless death, like Jo and Ellen. Just to make my point clear, I love this show and I'm a big fan, but I have to sort of go with Misha on this one. Supernatural has a serious thing for maiming and killing of women.

And there have been quite a few returning characters: only one thats only made ONE & one return only. Dad. In all hells breaks loose.
    There were:
mom jess meg ruby.grandpa grandma mom & dad(younger yrs)...

1st off there should have been one more option to vote on.
Going by characters, women, portraying victims, demons. & those who "get in the way". Nothing ever goes the guys way. Someone close to them gets killed off, always at a loss at their expense. Then theres the guys who get killed off that were close to them, dad, bobby, adam...
Women arent treated any different than any guy characters. Just as strong, & leading female characters.
The women in sam's life, around a lot longer than those of dean. They actually dont show/let lisa die.
So the other option here could be:
Women have been treated just as well as men & their characters have been. Theyve been key demons, key victims, key intimate characters for dean & sam, as much if not more than key characters portrayed by male characters have been.

In some respects the show has improved over the years. However the women that are brought on as potential love interests are usually developed and treated poorly. We expect the female characters to have the same depth and complexity as the new male characters. They have also killed off some great women but also great men. The difference is the men tend to return from the dead. Charlie is a wonderful example of a great character that has broken out of stereotypes, won over fans hearts and grown as a character. The writers respect her the other characters respect her. The moment I started to wonder about misogyny was in Remember the Titans, Artemis could've been so much more. However I believe it was hampered more by time constraints than misogyny. I hope the patron Goddess returns next season

If one wanted to argue that the show is misogynistic, you would be wrong. Most of the women that are recurring characters on the show have been seen in a strong, positive light, such as Jo or Ellen and now Charlie. But, as Misha did point out, they do seem to kill them off before they come between the boys. However, one can also say that about the men, such as Benny. He came between the boys as well, and they did away with him also. I don't think there is any biased towards women, just characters that get in the way. The men are treated just as poorly.
