Author Intent, or Reader Response?

I think what you've written makes sense. As writer's we want to evoke emotion and caring so that the reader wants to continue on with the story. AS a writer we want to create enough substance and imagery to help the reader follow the story. Whether they see it the way we paint it or not is secondary and differences of opinion open doors to debate and a good discussion which in turn can deepen a reader's understanding of what we've read or at the very least challenge the reader to think about what we've written. The more controversy the better the publicity and hopefully the more others will want to read a book to see for themselves.
