Is Edward Snowden, who leaked secret NSA surveillance information, a brave whistleblower or a reckless traitor?
A whistleblower. If he hadn't leaked this material we would never have known about the government's vast trove of telephone records and propensity for sifting through the Internet data of private citizens.
A traitor. He's sharing national security information with the media, China and Russia, potentially damaging our ability to defend ourselves.
Both. He exposed potentially illegal and unconstitutional actions of the executive branch. However, he should have exposed them via legal means, such as an inspector general or a sympathetic member of Congress, not the media or foreign governments.
It's still unknown. The Courts must first determine whether the NSA programs are themselves legal.
