How Should Music Piracy Today Be Dealt With?

No matter the changes in today’s music market, copyright infringement remains illegal and takes money out of musicians’ and companies’ pockets and as such those who steal copyrighted material should be penalized.

With today’s increasing range of available revenue streams for musicians and companies -- which includes touring, branding, synch and digital revenues – policing and penalizing piracy is a waste of resources that has little impact on copyright infringement rates or artists' and companies’ income streams.

A combination of continuing to improve free and legal options for consumers, increasing music's monetization and reasonable penalization for egregious music piracy is the best approach to keeping rampant music piracy at bay.

Music piracy helps promote music – some studies show illegal downloaders purchase more music than other demographics and help spread the word on new music-- copyright infringers therefore should not be punished.

The Copyright Alert System, the private sector’s solution (i.e. the “six strikes program") for alerting, educating, and punishing their subscriber base for file-sharing, which can include such penalties as bandwidth throttling, will turn out to be the right solution.

Music is meant to be free and there is nothing ethically or morally wrong with taking music.

Music is a commodity, stemming from a creative idea of an individual. Inevitably its up to the government to regulate the offenses taken against copyrighted music and to protect the people. This is a slow moving process since the inception of digital music. There has been progress in our government system of copyright protection for creators of music. Its just going to take some time but I truly believe that at some point the numbers are going to make sense to the government ensuring "Presidential protection" of music.
