Sure Stairway to Heaven is an iconic solo- but Jimi's Machine Gun is entirely in another realm.. spiritual, cosmic, political. Page's solo is brilliantly crafted and suites the song perfectly but Hendrix and Machine Gun transcends all of the things that make the Zeppelin song so great. It's a statement from the depths of his heart and performed live on New Year's eve in the midst of the Vietnam War. No contest.

Jimi was and is the master. No one could or can outplay or out-originate him. I've listened to "Machine Gun" since it first came out on vinyl. It still gives me chills. Page is great but the solos on those two songs has to go hands down to Jimi

I remember Jimmy page had a little bit of trouble with the solo on "Stairway to Heaven"... [H]e hadn't completely figured it out. I remember sitting in the control room with Jimmy, he's standing there next to me and he'd done quite a few passes and it wasn't going anywhere. I could see he was getting a bit paranoid and so I was getting paranoid.

Hendrix played the machine gun solo live off the top of his head,he didn't have three or four takes to get it right,he didn't have several months to plan.

Ask Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton In 1966 who they thought was the Most original authentic rock guitarist was.
How many Jimmy page songs does Eric Johnson do Live?
Why did Miles Davis want to have Jimi Hendrix in his band?
Why did John McLaughlin jam with Jimi Hendrix?
