Well, if autocorrect fixes everything, why does the lead article start out with "in this day in age..." when it should read "in this day and age"....??

There is no substitute for good grammar and spelling; spellcheck and grammar tools are only as accurate as those who make the choice to "change" or "ignore" the advice.

There is enough ignorance in this country as it is , why add to it ? I see adults that can't even carry on a decent conversation as it is, so who is going to train the children the correct way to spell and talk if not our teachers ?
What next, no school at all ? Just let the children be "streetwise" ? What the "h" is happening to our country ?

Assuming that automatic correction for grammar and spelling worked perfectly, can you imagine what would come out of these students mouths.

I was appalled that such a question popped up in a poll. I am long retired from teaching English in Public Schools, but I have had to accept much language corruption even though I believe it is wrong to take "shortcuts" when communicating in any language. It's no wonder that peoople don't understand each other.

As an English Major in college and a person who struggled with grammar from a young age, I think that eliminating grammar and spelling in schools would be a travesty to our children. Sure auto correct is there to help and I use it to help identify my problems, but a computer will never be able to interpret exactly what a person is trying to write. I always thought I was a great writer and received A's in all my English classes in my first two years of college because I could write so much better than most of the people in my classes. What my professors failed to tell me was that my grammar was atrocious. When I changed universities my new professors started giving me C's because of my grammar issues. My writing was not nearly as effective as it could be with proper grammar and syntax. I still struggle with grammar and wish I had spent more time studying grammar. I can only imagine what our children's writing abilities would be without grammar. Unless you understand how sentences are formed, you can't write effectively. Every profession I can think of requires writing and communication skills. Should we really take away an essential skill for future generations?

Children don't use proper English as it is. Spellchecks DO NOT always spell things correctly nor does it always put in the correct word. I actually think they need to go back to old school teaching when it comes to these subjects. I remember having to write my spelling words over and over for school so that we learned how to spell them correctly. I think the same should be done when it comes to math. The teachers allow the students to rely too heavily on calculators instead of teaching them how to add/subtract/etc.

I don't think teachers should stop teaching spelling and grammar because even though there is all of this technology kids need to know how to read and write and from what I hear kids say today it sounds very wrong.

Spelling and grammar play a very important role in reading and writing regardless of whether it is used on a computer or reading a book. How would you be able to recognize the word you are reading if you don't know how to spell it (spelling helps you "sound out the word"). With grammar you need to know when to quote someone and when not to...plagiarism would become a huge factor.

I don't think they should stop teaching spelling and grammar, but maybe reduce the amount that they teach and pick up on math science and communications skills

Hello! There is no auto-correct for one's mouth. People still need to speak correctly (or is that too old fashioned as well?)

Basic grammar gives an understanding of language - how about using the extra time to teach multiple languages and perhap the metric system since we are the only country not using it

From what I see of so many people today, they should INCREASE the amount of spelling and grammar classes in schools.......I'm just sayin" ................

Schools need to continue teaching spelling and especially grammar. Individuals need to be able to speak intelligently.

We are fast approaching the time when our technology replaces the cerebral cortex. Lose your phone lose your mind takes on a nightmarish literal meaning.
No, we need to teach spelling, grammar, literature, history, science as if our cognitive lives depend on it...because they do.

I have employees with master degrees who cannot write a complete sentence, It’s embarrassing. Any kind of technical job requires report writing skills. This would be a terrible idea.

Bad idea, I come in contact with so many people especially adults that don't use proper grammar and have serious spelling issues.

I do not think that is a very wise decision, the children of this generation need to be learn that. Why should they have to depend on auto correct half of the younger children are not on computers. I don't think that is fair to the children that want to learn the correct way and your pulling it from the schools. Why mess with a child's education to you it may not seem important but I have children in elementary and I feel it has been very beneficial for them.
