Smart grid is alive and well, and on schedule. VC funding has dropped off because it's not needed. Utilities have taken ownership and funding of smart grid implementation is becoming part of the regular rate structure.
Smart grid is going through a flat spot right now for many of the reasons you mentioned. But as with wind, things will sort themselves out and implementation will continue, although at a slower pace than was originally envisioned.
Smart grid goals are much narrower than they were a few years ago. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) will continue to build out primarily in support of outage management, and that will be about it.
