hp all the way, having no more books being currently written or movies being made yet people still posting and talking about it, it has touched the hearts of many internationally.

how can one really compare a classic with some hyped novel of this century? comparing the numbers and so on isn't exactly on an even playing field when you stop to consider the mass media of today and the sheer numbers of adolescents and pre-adolescents who tuned into that media hype. shall we also compare dracula to the twilight series?

And may I remind you Harry Potter accomplished this in a little more than a decade. It took Sherlock more than a century.

May, first Sherlock Holmes is not the most portrayed movie character, Dracula is. (Sherlock-226 Dracula-239) Second, The best Sherlock Holmes (Game of shadows) movie is #88 in top grossing with a total of $544 million worldwide, while The best Harry Potter (and the deathly hallows part 2) movie is #4 with a total of $1.33 billion worldwide. Even the worst grossing harry potter movie made $796 million.
Next, the books. Harry Potter has sold between 450 and 500 million copies, while according to ChaCha Sherlock has only sold about 400 million. Harry Potter has been written in 65 languages, while Sherlock has been written in 60. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sold 11 million copies in the first 24 hours of it's release making it the fastest selling book in history. And, J.K. Rowling was the first person in history to become a billionaire off of writing books. Plus, the word (Muggle) used in Harry Potter actually made it some dictionaries.
Sherlock is probably on too high of a level for some to grasp, so I understand a couple of the comments here.

Yeah.... This will defiantly not end well.. By the looks of it, can't we just agree that SuperWhoPotterLock wins? And May, touche.

Emily, if you're going to pull in the novels please allow me to point out the the Sherlock Holmes stories have been popular for almost 130 years. He is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most portrayed movie character in history with over 70 actors playing him in over 200 movies, not including the many stage and radio adaptations. His stories have been published in more than 60 languages and hundreds of countries.
After more than a century, no one can definitely state how many copies of the novels have been published. Granted this fandom war could be seen as focusing on one particular adaptation... but since you were bringing in book stats I had to point out that Harry Potter is an infant compared to Sherlock Holmes.
