Would you agree to merge Canada with the U.S. if all Canadians received a $500,000 payout?

Here is where all this started from. I cn not for the life of me figure out why this woman was allowed to cause an issue the could become or turn into a devastating effect. Also on the topic of excessive Govt. here in Ontatio alone its beyond any justifiable reasoning. Too many 6 figure deadbeats and tax dollars go to fund their existance. Speaking for myself I have nothing against the U.S.A. but on the poll issue my answer was a definate "NO". Hell the amount of sheets in a roll of toilet paper are probably worth more than the dollar, and each one does its job as intended.

I can't believe 37% of people so far have voted yes, this is the most stupid question!

Dream on, $500,000? The person that came up with this conclusion must be under the influence of a powerful drug. I wonder what the Americans think that Canada should pay them if we were ever to join up (NOT)?

Who comes up with this crap? My country is not available for "takeover".

We have enough corruption in our government without being involved with the American corruption.

Just to contemplate the idea is ridiculous. Even if they could, the U.S. of A. does not even have the money to give all and each one of us half a million dollars.

My citizenship is not for sale. The last thing I want is to be part of the USA, the country is a model for dysfunction.

The question/idea is entirely disturbing, not to mention offensive. NO, NO, No!

The problem with this country is we have too many chiefs and not enough indians. In other words, too much GOVERNMENT at all levels, with TOO HIGH SALARIES and pensions the people in the private sector could only dream of. This country is BLOATED at all levels!!

The way this country's politicians operate, what do we have to lose? $1.1 billion blown on gas plants to save the libs, Wallin, Brazeau & Duffy scamming us for $, when most Canadians don't even want the senate. I'll take the $500,000 , invest it, and get out of this country!

Both countries are trillions in debt, Americans about double the usual 10 time ratio, what, just print some more money! The loonie won't be worth much, after we buy them out...(tongue in cheek), One thing the Americans do have going for them, is their health insurance is a lot cheaper, by the time you factor in income tax portion, ohip premium, then private insurance on top of all that. The half million is tempting, but the consequences are dire. Both countries are long over due to get government spending under control. The current situation is not sustainable.

We Canadians cannot identify with the biggest bully nation of the world! No, no, no...

  • Alex - 11 years ago

would you sale your mother for 500k...?

  • must be a joke! - 11 years ago

no amount of money or ANYTHING will ever be enough to convince me (dare i say ALL Canadians) to consider joining the 2 countries. we won the war (1812), done! discussion over! Our country and her people are loved and respected around the world, why would we give that up to be joined by one of the most hated countries on the planet? for what? money? that's the American way NOT CANADIAN!!
the American way of life - their capitalist driven economy, their blatant racism and discrimination, their total disregard for the health of one another (lack of free health care for all) - what does america have to offer us that we don't already have in spades.
the mere thought of the two countries becoming one is absurd and ludicrous.

John's comments on immirgrants voting yes is not valid. I as an immigrant had a chioce many years ago either moving to US or Canada and I choose Canada and will not trade this for any amount of money.

  • Mike - 11 years ago

I could see the formation of North America.. like it was done in Europe: Canada would stay Canada but a new dollar would come in existence.

  • John - 11 years ago

The yes votes are likely recent immigrants with no sense of our history and who are here just for money! Why tie yourself to a sinking ship??

  • are you kidding? - 11 years ago

No way in hell! 500k in this economy is nothing compared to long term consequences. C'mon people! That's how such offers attract shallow part of the population. Few years down the road and "OMG what have we done?"
