Many years ago I was working in schools (working closely with many children, in many different schools - so lots of opportunity to be in contact with germs from many many students). I didn't even think about flu shots at that time. I came down with a flu that was so severe that I hallucinated, due to a very high fever. I was sick for weeks. If there is anything I can do to prevent myself from being that ill again, even if it isn't 100%, I'm going to do it.
Also, as a mother, when my daughter was 1, we were unable to get her a flu shot (long story - but she was ill every time we tried, so we finally gave up), and at the end of the season, she got the flu, then she got pneumonia, and then ended up with childhood asthma. All that has now resolved, but I wouldn't want to go through it again. Everyone in our family gets flu shots.
