I'm surprised House of the Scorpion is so far behind. :(
I've read The Inheritance Cycle and enjoyed it immensely, and it was one of my favorite books in the sixth-grade; but House of the Scorpion is so much better written and thought provoking. Granted House of the Scorpion made me want to hide under a rock and never come out, cause it explores some pretty disturbing concepts and I have a weak stomach. Regardless, I think Scorpion deserves to win. :(
