My daughter, younger brother, and first cousin are diagnosed. All of them are on different ranges of the spectrum.

I have 2 Adult children boy/girl who both have Autism. My son was diagnosed when he was nearly 4 years and my daughter with Aspbergers at age 11 years after we moved suburbs, My son also has Eplilepsy, severe speech impairment and ID. My daughter also has got ADD/ADHD, Conduct Disorder and Explosive Anger problems. My daughter was trialed on many drugs to help settle the symptoms of her angry outbursts but to no effect whatsoever. She is now 21 and a half & still has anger outbursts to the fact she has kicked in many glass windows, smashed doors, walls, furniture and even managed to completly destroy a metal washing machine. She also self-harms and had lots of nasty scarring on her arms but stops before she does any real harm to herself requiring hospital treatment. Has even almost concussed herself when she kept bashing her head on a brick wall while in DHS's care and no one even called us to tell what happened either and they tried to lie saying they rang me on my mobile the same day but it was turned on all day so the worker who lied got repremanded. My daughter now lives in supported accomodation with daily help now and is travel trained. We still have for home visits but my nerves are always on edge after all the hell she put both me + my hubby through. I have to have Valium at the ready as once she has an outburst of anger my poor nerves can't handle it.My son is the opposite, a very quiet calm young man who still struggles with language but uses sign language or we have to write social stories for him to respond and let us know what he wants. Both my kids are clever in their own way, my daughter is extremely good at drawing Mythical creatures and my son can beat teaching staff at his Adult Day Program at sudukos.

My 14 year old and my 5 year old were both just recently diagnosed. My husband as a child was diagnosed with some emotional disorder to the point of he will never act his age. I have looked up ASD for adults and he does show a lot of traits. He was even offered a full scholarship to ITT when he was 16 but he turned it down. So he is very smart just has this habit of jumping from one thing to another to try and learn about them like a jack of all trades master of none. Me I was always in the advanced classes and scored off the board on the IQ tests but Since my diabetes manifested I have noticed a serious loss of memory which I am also having looked into. Have other ASD people noticed that there are other health issues that manifest as they get older? My mom and oldest son are both diagnosed with auto-immune disorder and both also show several signs of ASD but will not get tested. and I am also trying to get testing for auto immune disorder myself. Is this common with ASD?? I ask because I have met very few with the disorder who can kinda set me into the right direction on how to deal with this and to best help my sons so they can succeed. Kind of scary right now because they just now found out the problem. before my 14 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD and the meds almost killed him. I had to home-school for a while because the teachers weren't helping him at the time and the meltdowns were intense and lasted for days. Thank goodness it is much better now and the school knows I intend to be VERY involved to make sure he gets the help he needs but it is a battle. Any advice on what I should do or look into to get in the right direction would be greatly appreciated . Even other parents that have been through this any tips or pointers would be great. My e-mail is commonbarbie2000@gmail.com please feel free to shoot me a mail if you have any wisdom you would like to share. Sorry for the long post and thank you for the tolerance.

4 diagnosis just in the immediate family- self, husband, and two children. Husband's cousin also diagnosed. On top of that, a number of adult family members on both sides also have traits of ASD.

Husband's diagnosis at the time was PDD-NOS, self was Aspergers, oldest is Aspergers, youngest was diagnosed recently, and so just has the ASD diagnosis.

My precious grandson is on the high end of the spectrum now, after much therapy and excellent parenting. For years he'd have violent meltdowns from any change in his environment, that lasted for an hour or so. Now as long as he knows what's coming, he is fine with change.

I've been diagnosed with ADHD (by a PHD) and other "learning disabilities" since I was a child. However, I do have a high IQ in some areas. I always felt I wasn't normal and knew I didn't know how to fit in with regular social norms. I still don't. I hate and can't make small talk, for instance. Talking on the phone for me, is painfully frustrating. I still avoid most social activities at age 68, except for family ones.

My darling grandson and I have a bond that can't be described and I knew from his infancy, when I first held him, that there was something wrong.... Every positional shift, while holding him, would get a negative reaction from him. That was my first clue. It wasn't until he was almost 18 months old, did his parents have an "official" diagnoses, mostly from his inability to play with other children.

Like most children on the spectrum, he doesn't like to be hugged, kissed, etc. But still at age 11, he wants to sit on my lap, when we watch "Annoying Orange" or other funny stuff on You Tube together. He will not do this with anyone else. So I feel I've been given an amazing, special gift.

Hope these small facts help in your study.

    hi,
I found out when I was about 46 that I have aspergers. I believe that my mother was autistic, but am not sure, she kicked me out of her life when I was 28. Her mother, my grandmother, might have been austic, I am not sure, she did not show traits of it. My cousin, kids on my mother's side are, I think one of them was diagnosed as autistic, and he is also has other problems. I am 54, and am able to control 99% of my symptoms. I spoke in person to Temple Grandin, and we both had figured out that sugar is a bad chemical for our brains. So I try to have very little sugar in my diet and not many carbs, I take alot of vitamins to make up for the vits and minerals because I don't eat many fruits due to the sugar in them. I worked at COrnell University from 1988 to 2001 when my job was outsourced, I mostly worked with computers in different science fields, including the Space Science dept with Carl Sagan. :) I have a BS of a double major of computers and pre-med, and a double minor of math and music. Later I went on and received a MS in Lit. all on Mark Twain, and while at Cornell, started about 5 different PhD's, which I might not get to finish, due to dept. restrictions. Anyway, feel free to e-mail me if I can help in anyway :)
    Thanks!
