Why don't some men want to neuter their dog?

Most men feel they would be less of a man if they had it done to themselves, so they think the same way about their dogs. I don't believe most men think about the health aspect of the pet. However, it would be fine to do it to a female. Hypocrisy.

Why doesn't PetPlace put out UNBIASED information with EVIDENCE BASED research on altering dogs and cats as well as other pets?

There are TWO issues here. HEALTH of a dog that may need to mature in hormones, bones, growth plates, organs, and brain before being altered, and UNRESPONSIBLE OWNERS who ALLOW BREEDING of pets that should not be bred and the RESCUES or STRAYS.

If a owner is RESPONSIBLE and sets up their home and property so there are NO accidents, then it is up to them. If there is an accidental breeding, they can rush to the vet and stop the breeding from taking.

ALL RESCUE pets should be altered so that NO ACCIDENTS happen. The AGE is IMPORTANT. My veterinarian used to do pediatric altering ..........she REFUSES now. She will not until the dog is over 6 to 10 months, depending upon the breed.

Research shows this. I have a CONTRACT so that my pet pups are not altered until the puppy bitch is over 1 year and the puppy dog is 18 months to 24 months. The bitch is only delayed one heat cycle because the increase of cancer incidence increases past the 2nd heat cycle. My show dogs can't be altered until their show careers are over.

I think some men don't like the idea of testicles being removed, but most understand the importance in certain situations.

PLEASE POST EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH so people can read for themselves.

My neighbor has a very old dog with tons of energy- lots of health-- it acts like a puppy- it was never "fixed".
My other neighbor has an old dog that can barely walk ---with arthritis and back problems---- it was "fixed".
There's pros and cons to neutering and not neutering. You weigh the risks and make your decision- if you don't alter your pet you can always change your mind.

I totally think it's a macho man thing! And I think men who don't neuter their animals should be neutered themselves because, obviously, they are idiots, and sure as heck shouldn't reproduce!

On the advice of my vet I neutered my Springer Spaniel at 6 months. He changed from being an outgoing, friendly and delightful dog with a beautiful coat to being a neurotic, scared of his own shadow and with a coat that resembled a Jacob sheep! Never again, and I have no problems with my two entire male Cocker Spaniels who love people and other dogs . What we need is responsible animal ownership - maybe there should be neutering for some humans. (and yes I know that is "politically incorrect")

I have only ever owned rescued mixed breed animals. Over a period of 25 years 8 dogs in total (some have already passed away at 18years and 15years).
Male and female dogs have had a home with our family. ALL OUR COMPANION ANIMALS have been desexed.
I consider it good responsible pet ownership and good welfare. If people volunteered in rescue centres they might get a truer picture of abandoned animals/ bitches who cease to be wanted. I have also fostered many orphaned litters. ..Puppies put into plastic bags and dumped into rubbish bins because owners don't care, have not been vigilant and have allowed their dog(s) to mate. I consider such action selfish and ignorant. There should be tight controls on breeders who are there for the $$$. Animals are business. Sadly, these animals are just another commodity to be exhanged and then dumped in rehoming centres when owners have buyers remorse!

I have owned and bred Border Terriers for over thirty five years. I have never had a dog castrated except for medical reasons, such as an enlarged prostate in old age.I am totally opposed to such a procedure (as also I am opposed to spaying bitches).I consider it unethical to expose a dog or bitch to an unnecessary surgical procedure, especially when done for the convenience of the owner.
Castration od a dog doesn't prevent it being attracted to bitches in season, and most will still cock their legs.
If castration has to be performed, it should not be done until after the long bones have stopped growing and the heads of the bones become fused.Six months is too young, particularly in large breeds.
The hormones produced by the testicles are necessary for the correct development of the whole animal. A vet who castrates at six to eight weeks, is in my opinion, guilty of professional misconduct.

I don't want a mean dog. So that has nothing to do with it. I have more concerns about the dogs health. In some European countries nuetering a healthy dog is illegal. It's not necessairy for health reasons. Contrary, there are many studies that show there are less problems with various diseases and ortho issues such as hip dyslasia. I am definately against early neutering (before 12 months or before when the growth plates are closed). Some coutnries are doing more vasectomies. Vasectomy would be less invasive, less complications, and allow the male dog to continue to have the health benefits testosterone nature intended him to have. This article is just one of many that you should read. Educate yourselves people. http://news.ucdavis.edu/search/news_detail.lasso?id=10498
