When I was diagnosed with optic neuritis my doctor at that time told me he was pretty certain that it wasnt MS. I was told that my sight would recover over a period of one year and although would not return to 100% it would be pretty close to it. I never recovered my sight fully and now only have 40% vision in my right eye, if I could go back then I would definitely consider any form of treatment. It must be noted here that I had not yet been diagnosed with MS and the doctor concerned was only an ophthalmic doctor so a second opinion would also had been advisable

I had complete ON in my left eye in 1982. This was 3 weeks before my wedding. I was to;d by my Dr. that I just nervous and that's why. I was bitten by something about a week earlier. Turns out that it turned bright red and ended up having a bulls eye around it. Not much was known about Lyme then. Vision came back about 85% 8 months later. Scar tissue o the optic nerve. Symptom were non existent for about 4 1?2 years. No MRI'S yet available, they started doing them in '87. I had my first one in Feb. '88. That's when got the def. Dx. My 2nd child was 6 mos. then. Still no symptoms. Started gait issues about 7 years later. Slow progression since then, now use a walker and/or scooter depending on the distance. If they had any idea back then, who knows, I may be able to walk better and treated long before I was. Still get IV steroids monthly, on Ampyra and Baclofen. Definitely progressing but thankfully at a slow rate. Attitude is the #1 medicine! Have had many too many other health symptoms since. Had a husband who couldn't handle it all, been divorced for 16 years.... Lauri

i had opticus n., , this was the first obvious sign of MS. I got 'totally'blind, it healed in about 3 months without taking medicine.
when i am very tired or stressed it comes back a bit. i have grey spots in my vision.

i stopped driving in a car for that reason, i cannot trust my vision as it can change any time.

i am happy i did not take any medicine although i was very, very sick; it got better.

I have had Optic Neuritis twice, since I was diagnosed with MS in August 2011. First was my left eye, then was my right eye about 5 months later. Both times I was treated with IV Steroids and have full site back in both eyes there is a little damage, but still do not need glasses so that's a bonus. I have been on copaxone since I was diagnosed and my last relapse was my right eye in February 2012. I do get really bad fatigue though and the heat does affect me apart from that I am fine :)
