The truck hiding the impact and also serving to cushion his fall, the mortuary girl allowing Sherlock to "borrow" a corps and disguising him. All too simple.
I was very important for the safety of all his friends to be dead... so it needed to be very realistic in addition the reaction of his friends to be very realistic. Sherlock also needed time to unravel the web of assassins the Moriarty put in place to kill his friends. Once all of that was done, he could come back from the dead. :)
