Do you agree with the decision to keep public and Catholic schools open?

It is very aggravating that Detroits schools are closed but here we only cancel buses (even buses sometimes run), national weather warnings to stay inside and avoid going anywhere but schools are still open!? With the windchill being like - 30 tomorrow the schools should definitely be cancelled, or at least buses (both should but doubt it). Greedy school board keeping schools open for the money, ridiculous.

Even though the buses may be canceled, everyone that walks is expected to go. In all honesty, if the roads are not plowed and safe what makes them think that the sidewalks are? Most of the time they are never plowed to begin with...The windchill is extremely high to the point that frostbite is a major factor... From my own everyday experience, my commute only has a sidewalk for half the way, forcing me to walk on the streets! My mind goes crazy with the thought that at any moment a car could wipe out and hit me.......... I'm not pleased at all with the whole "snow day" "no buses" idea

    We live in Canada!!!

Why is the option to take your children to school in the event that bus transportation is not available due to weather a problem to so many? Other public sectors and Social Services offices didn't close their doors. Banks, grocery stores, gas stations, and other public amenities such as Malls and department stores are open, yet people are complaining about having to drive on the back roads to get to their place of employment? This is not the school's issue and in fact, it is yours- knowing that you have to drive on the back roads to get to where you are going, you probably should have used some forethought and planned more effective strategies for your personal safe transportation throughout the Winter months if- heaven forbid- Windsor/Essex experiences a snow storm.

Again- we live in CANADA. And believe it or not, there are tools out there that will make your Winter driving experience a safer than if these were not utilized. It is expected that there will be some snowy days throughout the winter months that may cause some difficult or even treacherous driving conditions. If you feel that it is not possible for you to leave your home, then don't- but don't chastise those who actually prepare for the season which has inevitably visited the area 3-4 months out of the year for as long as Canada has existed. What Windsor has experienced is only a fraction of what other Canadian Cities experience in a season. Quit complaining. Purchase Winter tires. Take your time on icy or snowy roads and arrive alive.

Ok so the health unit is warning people to stay in due to the EXTREME cold and WIND CHILL FACTOR but the school boards only concern is the government funding they would be losing out if they closed all schools… pretty sad the almighty dollar takes precedence over our children's safety…..

It is not the School Boards prerogative to close the school. If they close the school completely they lose the grant money from the Province of Ontario (Ministry of Education). They may suspend use of school buses for safety of the children but cannot close the school or they will lose grant money for the time its closed.Contact your MPP to have this changed. It is an asinine bureaucratic maneuver to irritate the local boards to show them who has the power. Politics acting out vote pandering because parents need their babysitters. Nothing happens at the school. Nobody teaches their curriculum because not enough kids show up. Your kids get no education that day. U of Windsor closes because they control everything. Not dependent on the Provincial grants. All employees safety is at risk when it's not safe to travel. Lawsuit is looming over this policy one day.

The weather today (during regular school hours) Monday, January 6th, hasn't been too bad. I was more uncomfortable on my way to work on the morning of Thursday, January 2nd.

If the daytime temps were anything like what we are expecting tonight and tomorrow I might have agreed that schools should have been closed, however, I agree with the school's decision made at 6am today to keep public schools open, regardless of whether or not buses were running.

I don't understand why it's OK to cancel the buses because of the weather but still make the teachers come in. One of many who live out in the County and have to drive down many back roads to get to her school my daughter has to take her life in her hands and report to school even though there won't be more than 5-8 kids who live close enough to walk make it to school today. She doesn't even do her regular lessons with so few kids and then having to redo the lesson on another day when the whole class is there. Why the double standard when it's OK for teachers to risk their lives but don't let the little darlings have to go out in the snow and cold. I know it's all because of the government grants but they should include these situations in their calculations.
