I cannot imagine the experiences of the trolls who rate this extraordinary place and its facilities so harshly. Did it storm rain all the time? Do they dislike communal dining? Perhaps they are painters seeking the precious coddling of Yaddo, Omi or Millay? Get over it!

As I've observed over repeated residencies (and I'm going back this summer) Salem Art Works has steadily and stunningly evolved over its first decade. At this point, for my work, it distills and enables the essence of working art, around you and for you, on every front. The facilities now available (2013-14) are beyond any other I've known in range and situation, and the commitment of the staff cannot be improved upon. The physical beauty of its setting and vistas, the equipment and studio spaces available, the encouragement to experiment and explore new forms and methods, its proximity to a great small town and lively cultural destinations in every direction -- Christ, what is the problem here? Don't like some of the lodging options? Try another! Bring a tent! Get real!

I can't wait to get back, and I know dozens of folks who are jealous that I have the chance to return.
