Sydney has Sydney Harbour, the Gold Coast has the Broadwater. Can you imagine Sydney having a gaol site like ugly Ephraim Island stuck right in the middle of its Harbour, even worse you want to put a 50 storey building on Fort Denison. Tourist come to the Coast for its beaches and waterways not to look at more high rises and buildings. Nature is what we all marvel at, certainly not the style of bricks & mortar on the Coast.

    So many negative comments.
Yes there will be a few issues along the way however you have to look at the positives. Australia is a developing country and has so much to offer for overeas visitors and travellers - all of whom bring money into the area. There will of course be job opportunities for locals in the Gold Coast region - that's got to be a good thing. The trouble is many older people need to see the future for growth and opportunity - younger people have their own future to think of and grasp a career opportunity of their own. Yes there may be downsides to the eco environment however in the whole scheme of things it is a relatively small project - if people genuinely believe in the environment why don't they focus on wider issues such as the harm the mining companies are doing to the land and the barrier reef. It might not be on their doorstep but they have all far reaching and more serious concerns for Australia and its environment.
This part of the coast is desirable for many people to visit and why not - it has beauty and awesome beaches etc. Developers these days are amazing at construction and thinking of the local environment and animal life - if the animal life doesn't like it then I am sure they can choose to live in another part of the coast (Bribie, Straddy etc). I think people should embrace the change and the positive impact it would bring after all isn't it good to share this beauty with other people in the world who would visit. Accept - Embrace and Enjoy and have vision for our future generations.

The YES votes are like lotto gamblers looking for the $40m payout. Star gazing at the main prize. Understandable but reality is to look at the odds. What are the odds that this will finish anywhere near as planned. Please note these are Chinese developers using Chinese money.

Firstly these guys come and go as the financial and political fortunes of China rise and fall. And fall they will.

Cant happen? The promotors of these landmark projects were also the brightest guys the room. Google them and get your heads around the odds not the prize.

    Nakheel Tower
    The Palm Deira
    Micheal Schumaker Business Avenue
    The World Islands

Secondly the concept will be sold on its vision. Just because it is on paper does not mean this is what will be delivered. Soon as they are willing to admit that the return on $5B is fairyland it will be compromise after compromise. " I am here for the long term" said no Chinese developer EVER.

Finally, after years of business with the Chinese I distilled dealing with them into 2 key understandings:

    1. Nothing is ever what it seems
    2. Its all in how you tell the story

This consortium is not developing to a Gold Coast vision. They are after a stranglehold on property or access to casino rights and will manipulate a gullible council and public till they have eliminated all options and then drive home the real agenda. They are story telling and don't believe what you hear for a second..

Start them on the Terminal, see how they perform and then take it to the next step. See if they perform before crucifying Wave Break.

Dawn C. Please do a forensic on this consortium. Recently a L'Oreal China exec wrote "show me a successful Chinese businessman and I will show you a crime". 2014 L'Oreal closed shop in China.

    Just read

Confucius say: 1 term Tom + Chinese Pied Piper = Island of Broken Dreams

    Says it all really.

What a monstrosity.. I can't believe it had come this far, despite being clear that this project is unwanted by the majority of the coast's residents. Why are we being ignored? How can you destroy such a beautiful place? A massive NO from me and most of the people I know!

  • Kellie Paterson - 10 years ago

Tom...I don't want it, i don't want it for my children, i don't want it for the thousands of people who enjoy the spit every weekend. All politicians want is some sort of legacy. Five minutes claim to fame, don't fix something that isn't broken. A massive NO from me.

  • Ignorant Local - 10 years ago

It nevers ceases to amaze me how many people havent researched this oroject in detail but still think its a great idea. and have a strong opinion about it. THe light rail project and Commonweath Games Pool has employed a very low percentage of locals in its work force Fact! The light rail project is projected to loose money Fact! Tot Tate show us where these mythical 36,000 local jobs coming from. I have looked at this project and your figures are outragous. 3,500 Jobs part/time may be created how many will go to locals??? Stop LYING to the PUBLIC TOM !!
If money was spent beautifying the city and the spit with a alow impact development that everyone could enjoy is a much more suitable comprimise , creates jobs and keeps the wider community happy.
and more work done by GC tOURISM, tourist might start realsiing we have other attractions than just tacky theme parks and shadowed out beaches

  • Ryan - 10 years ago

Go back home to Asia Tom Tate!! You don't belong on the Gold Coast.

  • L. Carleton - 10 years ago

Firstly, the picture is total misrepresentation… the biggest thing being the blue WATER WOULD BE BROWN NOT BLUE from the dredging. get it… brown water. everyday.not blue.
True progress is kicking Tate out of office and preserving the spit and the waterway…Making the spit more user friendly and giving it the respect it deserves; a commemorative name for the parklands, improved picnic areas and amenities if anything... the traffic in there is purely enjoyment now and thousands of people get healthier like that than an alcohol fuelled casino would ever dream. All you lobbying for progress need to look again because you know whats right for your health… not a CST ruining the purity of the North end. Face it, purity and natural beauty are what you look for on a relaxing holiday and you know deep down that you want that in your life… a CST will only stifle the fresh air that comes off stradbroke island, pollute the water clarity as well and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to think twice about where their kids and grandkids or their friends kids will play and where you will play to detox after a night at jupiters . wake up.

  • Steve - 10 years ago

Cannot possibly see how anyone can say this is a bad idea.

More jobs, more income for the local economy. The spit will still be a good spot for a fish for locals. Would be great having a casino on the northern end of the coast too instead of having to venture down to Broadbeach.

And I can't see how it would affect the surfers at TOS either.

Time to look at the bigger picture and Bring It On!

  • darin earwicker - 10 years ago

The hight of stupidity those of you that don't use the spit your ignorance has no bounds. As a true local not a bank balance from down south. A family destination is not a casino its beachs and fun parks. If your for this go down to the spit this weekend and see how many people use it and how hard it is to get there. Its our land not Tates or Newmens lets see if these gutless pollies turn up for public meetings and see what the real locals want. When will we get a counsel that is interested in the people that live here. The destruction of our water ways for Toms las vagASS on the gold coast is only followed buy the sheep that will believe scabbott and Newmen.

  • Netta - 10 years ago

Arrogant surfers act like they own the Gold Coast! It's high time the GC had proper tourist infrastructure and it would be an absolute boon for the local economy and jobs, both during construction and after. Other ports in Australia are reaping the benefits of tourism that should be coming here. The Greens are just plain anti-development - just think what they would have said about GC Airport if it was yet to be established. Don't impede progress for purely selfish reasons..

By building this cruise ship terminal, access to Straddie will be nearly impossible, and the dredging of the seaway would negatively impact the surf there. Straddie, in my opinion, is one of the best waves in the world and the amount of people surfing or bodyboarding there on any given day reinforces this. Straddie brings in $20 million a year to the local economy, and is one the most important surf breaks for surf tourism in Northern Gold Coast. Not only will the terminal affect Straddie, it will affect the spit and wavebreak, which is the home to over 400 marine organisms including turtles and dugongs.

South Stradbroke Island and the Spit are awesome surf spots and great places for Gold Coast families to come and enjoy safe protected swimming beaches inside the broadwater. This stupid proposal is the last thing the Gold Coast needs. The environmental effects far outweigh any possible financial gain the minor increase in tourism that the ships would bring. Dont let Tom Tate go ahead with projects that are socially and environmentally destructive.

  • Troz - 10 years ago

Why does this poll hide the number of actual votes and only display the proportion? It's pretty hard to determine the reliability of the result if only 10 people have voted..

  • Daniel Kenafake - 10 years ago

This proposal is absolutely ridiculous. Think of the impact from the construction alone... The light rail was bad enough. The GCCC is under the control of Tom Tate and his group of Chinese profiteers, I would not be surprised if almost all jobs will go to foreign workers and a majority of the profit will be directed to the Chinese govt or the private investors involved in the project (Tate's profiteers). The only people that will benefit from this do not live on the Gold Coast.

  • Chinaman - 10 years ago

Fank you very much for this proposal mr tate! now i can eat frie ricce on irand in sea.

  • Tom Tate - 10 years ago

What is wrong with you people. I've talked to heaps of Gold Coasters (5) and they have all agreed that the cruise ship terminal is a fantastic idea.

  • Francisco Soler - 10 years ago

The Gold Coast is a beautiful city and well known for it's NATURAL tourist attractions; such as whale watching, surfing, snorkelling, and even the simple peace of walking on the beaches. The cruise ship terminal would only eliminate all of those Gold Coast beauties.

  • Blake Gryls - 10 years ago

I live there. Just cause a green boat enjoys what Tom tate CANT :D

  • Louis McMillan - 10 years ago

What is it with getting companies from other countries to do the planned proposals? Why don't we use Architecture firms that are based here in Australia? Such as DBI Design, they already have planned proposals for a cruise ship terminal. After all those designs are more environmentally friendly compared to this proposal and would give a better reputation for the council using companies based in the city.

  • Aylin - 10 years ago

I think this cruse ship terminal is really really really bad.

Have you ever been down to this area? From the car park at Philip Park to the end of the Spit is notorious for homosexuals looking and having sex. The sand dunes and behind the paths are full of tracks that lead to areas where men participate in sex. I would guess that that majority of people who are against this development would not even be aware of this and just believe that it is a 'nice' park. Go for a drive there any time of day or night and park in the car park and you can see multiple men cruising the area. walk down the tracks and you will see much more. It is time this area was cleaned up and made truly an area where families and people can enjoy, Well done Tom Tate, this will bring a lot of employment and tourists to the city. I would really like to see the local paper and media do an expose on the seedier side of this area to really educate Gold Coast people what their park is really used for.

  • James - 10 years ago

So many former Mayoral candidates on here (Susie Douglas, Peter Young) - last time I checked Tom Tate won the election. They're just bitter and unemployed. How about some plans that will create jobs here on the coast?

  • Bill - 10 years ago

Susie Douglas you obviously have not tried to access the beach along the spit. Everyone knows what type of people frequent that area. How about you get of your behind and clean it up so we can access and enjoy the spit then. Pristine waterways you are kidding. After you make an attempt to access the spit thru the dunes past the you know whats then put your boat in the Broadwater for a lovely quite sunday cruise around and perhaps a little snorkling somewhere in between the jet skis and the other 2000 boats on any given day.
I think you need to lift up your head from the sand sweetheart.

  • Bill - 10 years ago

Voting is a joke. Clicked yes 10 times. Wake up Bulletin.

  • Reuben bell - 10 years ago

    Absolutely stupid idea as usual.
    Environmentally friendly ?NO
economic boost?maby but will your bank balance benefit?NO
just another way of destroying natural beauty and world class waves.
If you can tell me how a casino can bring anything positive to our community I would live to hear your lies otherwise sink this idea like the rest of the failures

  • Barb from Melb - 10 years ago

It really does look like a massive return to the developer! A massive reduction in publicly accessible waterway; massive initial profits out of sales of residential property; massive hand over of public land - a gift worth upwards of $600M by conservative estimates; a massive ongoing responsibility for council.

Even with the estimated return per year, the balance seems to be swayed against the rate payers of the GC. Another Connex?

  • brian feeney - 10 years ago

These online polls mean nothing. Not a representative sample of the population. Worse than nothing because they are unrepresentative but are presented as though they do somehow tell us 'what people think' about the CST

  • Craig - 10 years ago

No doubt those pro-CST supporters are rejoicing, however on what research do you base your support? This proposal is disgusting. It is a pure land grab of billion dollar property for zero gain and zero financial reimbursement. The CST proposal has been proven time and time again to be unviable on every ground possible. It is unsound financially, environmentally and safety wise. It will create massive traffic problems at the Spit which already gets clogged. The Seaway is not designed to cope with the massive cruise ships and even after dredging, it won't be deep enough due to the coffee rock base. The fight continues.

  • Barbara - 10 years ago

Come on Gold Coast, it needs redevelopement all the time. This will be great for the community, employment, state taxes, tourism.this is what drives the Gold Coast . Get with the times, and psst what about all the sand banks at low tide, disgusting ( not a pretty site, ask the tourists).
Even the dolphins will have a ball, showing off to the tourists.
YES !! It will be amazing for TOURISM and for EMPLOYEMENT .

  • Dan - 10 years ago

The spit is a beautiful area both above and below the water and if some of these people who say it isn't actually spent some time there would know that. Been going there for over 25 years and have never seen any of this so called seedy behavior. Get a life people and start enjoying the great outdoors.

  • Leigh Kelly - 10 years ago

As someone who grew up on the Gold Coast loving the beach lifestyle and having travelled all over Australia surfing this countries best spots I cannot understand how any one can even contemplate allowing this sort of development anywhere along our coastline. It is quiet obvious there is money to be made and those members of our community that care more for money than the health of our environment are trying to get there hands on public space. This sort of development cannot be allowed to destroy our beaches nor our world class surf breaks!

  • Byron Wyatt - 10 years ago

This proposal is just another land grab. The broad water and the spit belong not only to the Gold Coast but indeed all the people of Australia. What gives these clowns the right to give this area over to a foreign company to develop in order to make more money. It's good for tourism and the local economy we are told. People have been coming to the Gold Coast for ore than 100 years, not to go to casinos or get on a ship but to enjoy the beaches and waterways. DONT ruin the last remaining natural areas for the sake of a few dollars and the Mayors ego. Let's leave our grandchildren the opportunity to enjoy the beaches and open spaces.

  • Mr S - 10 years ago

The CST will be the best project the Gold Coast will ever get, lets get on with it.

  • Dave - 10 years ago

Looks fantastic. People have to realise that the Gold Coast is a tourist city. People don't come here to look at the wasteland that is the end of the Spit, nor the 30 drunk boaties that party on (the man made) Wavebreak Island. We need to draw people here with a cruise ship terminal (and they will come back for extended visits in future), a new exciting non-derelict casino, and a vibrant hub in Southport. For those that are complaining, perhaps the government should create a register with your names (consider it a petition to suck you in) and then when the project is underway you are blacklisted from the construction and subsequent jobs to run the venues and events. Then again most of you are probably dole bludgers anyway. Tom Tate, this MUST be built to bring the Gold Coast up to a world standard tourist destination again.

  • Greg Kenafake - 10 years ago

Ludicrous. Ridiculous and just plain dumb. If the Chinese wish to build a casino and a Cruise Ship Terminal then let them build it on their own land in their own country. As for all the supposed jobs this project will create; do we not have the ability to to generate employment in other ways that actually leave part of our unique environment in its current state? If built, how will the road and sewerage infrastructure of The Spit and Labrador / Southport cope? Who pays for that? If one marine creature were to be harmed in this construction process then that is one too many, a single yabbie is far more important and valuable than boatload of cruisers who can just as easily disembark in Brisbane. Every surfer, fisherman, dog walker, boa tie needs to clearly tell the council that this proposal is wrong.

  • Stephen - 10 years ago

As a property owner on the Gold Coast I am very happy that a cruise terminal is coming our way. It will be great for my own travels of which cruising is a great part and will also bring more people to the place that I love and rave about to everyone I meet on my travels.

  • Stewart - 10 years ago

What a ridiculous proposal..The last remaining space left on the Gold Coast, and they want to destroy the area. The area should be a designated green space, manicured lawns, gardens, recreational area... A protected reserve....Tom Tate, get ya head out f the sand...

  • Jeff - 10 years ago

Tom Tate promised us a cruise ship terminal if he was elected....Now he must deliver....
Just build it & watch how many people use it....anythings better than the useless area that currently exists there...
These cruise ships are truly magnificent & I can imagine how many people will line the seaway just to watch them sail in & out of our beautiful city....

  • Moving Forward - 10 years ago

I'M ALL FOR IT!!!! Lets go Gold Coast, open your eyes GC, look to the future.

  • Peter Young - 10 years ago

Just 28% of all voters supported Tom Tate for Mayor, and yet both he and the State Government call this a 'mandate' for a cruise ship terminal in the Broadwater.
So how on earth is Tate and 'his' Council accurately and honestly going to be able to demonstrate public support for this proposal?
I say hold a proper public referendum.
A development of this nature and size and with such evident public concern and potential impact certainly deserves this!

  • Kim Raymond - 10 years ago

Usually artists impressions make things look better than they actually are. This case even an artists impression cannot hide a monstrosity . There is less access for families, less amenity for mum and dad boaters, less sea grass and yabbie banks. More what looks like private beaches. An ill placed tower. there will need to be more rock walls to stabilise the naturally shifting sands. There will be greater congestion in the channels.
    "significant challenges" what an understatement.

  • Susie Douglas - 10 years ago

The Council ought to hang their heads in shame that they have allowed this monstrosity to get the green light to progress. The beauty and the attraction of the Coast is the accessibility to open space for tourists and day trippers. The open waters, the pristine water, the diving, surfing, whale watching are all great to attract tourists. A concrete jungle and the associated congestion will be even more of a reason not to visit the GC The environmental impact of the dredging on the Seaway is going to destroy the very thing that makes the GC so special.

Judging by who owns the Gold Coast Bulletin, I have no doubt in my mind that this poll is rigged. Anyone who loves the Gold Coast lifestyle can see for sure that a terminal is a giant hole of debt and destruction, not to mention all the environmental factors.
