Is the punishment too harsh?

This punishment is beyond too far. This child make an attempt to make the right decision. The Principle of this school should of used better judgment in this case and simply poured the can out. From my experience with a child going to alternative school (currently have a son there now) the principle calls the shots and the principle had the opportunity to make a wise decision. This decision will affect this child for the rest of his life and how he looks at people of authority and doing the right thing. Shame on the principle for not handling this situation differently. These principles and school administrators are given the power to make decisions regarding our children every day and while most of the time they do make the right decision in this case it was not. While rules are made to be followed and not broken there is always a chance to do what is best for the child and being a person of authority such as a principle or school administrator, they clearing need to look at the situation and make the right choice regarding that child.
