The question is NOT whether or not the young girl realised that it was a criminal offence or not, she's the VICTIM. The question should be on the MAN. A grown man. An adult who DOES know better and still proceeded to rape this girl (as she cannot lawfully give consent, it is rape). He's the ADULT in the relationship, it's HIS responsibility to say "No" to inappropriate and illegal contact with a minor.

The question should be, "Do children think that underage sex should be considered a crime?" given that we are, as human beings, becoming far more advanced both emotionally, psychologically, and physiologically. At the age of 12 I was sexually active. By 16 I was dating a 26 year old. I did not see it as criminal, and if anything, I had persuaded the 26 year old to accept me, as opposed to the inverse of a 'sex predator' preying on a younger person.
We need to appreciate that people under the age of 16 are sexually active. This is the condom / sex talk nonsense all over again, we can't sweep it under the rug and ignore it and criminalize people whom sexually active minors seduce as predators. In many, many instances minors use that as a tool, if the relationship fouls, they can threaten to run to the authorities claiming statutory rape; as was the case with many female teachers who had 'fallen in love' with school boys in the past few decades who's lives were ruined.
Admittedly sexism is alive and well there too; if those teachers had been male they would have been hung, drawn, and quartered. But we cannot just NOT talk about this and then stone anyone who has sex. Sex is part of the human condition, the nature of the beast if you would. There is no possible way to curb the sexuality of minors who are maturing earlier, nor is there any possible way to deter people over 16 or even over 60 from finding the amorous approach of a minor who looks and acts over 16 and seduces them by just throwing everyone in prison or on a sex predator list.
