Should Essendon sack James Hird?

James Hird is not at fault , he was clearly given a job which he was in no way Qualified to do. He hadn't even worked as an assistant coach. The poor fellow was a very good footballer who showed
many times during his time in media that he was not as smart as he & others thought he was.I hope that Essendon keep him on because he is not qualified to coach anywhere else and carries so much baggage including his wife. Do Essendon get rid of him and lose $5000000 + or continue
to risk more problems from this unqualified lose cannon and continue to see the cost rise.

Can we layer some perspective over this. Firstly, take responsibility for your actions, forgiveness will follow. Secondly, It is a game, lives are not saved, starving children are not fed. Thirdly, he has been paid a million dollars to be educated (no comment) in France.

At the game on Friday night majority of supporters said enough is enough - it was very wrong for Tania Hird to come out the night before our first game - go air your sour grapes somewhere else - the club is bigger than the Hirds - most supporters stood loyal to Hird during the saga - but now the majority feel (poll Herald Sun 79%) Hird must be sacked. Let's see whether the club is bigger than the Hirds - bye bye Hirds as supporters, players and coaches just want to get on with the game - its our game - members are sick of the disruptions - Essendon is far bigger than James Hird. President and Board remember your members who have stayed loyal - the last game last year - emotional when the players went around the ground at the end of the game - Friday night full of emotions - but dampened by the Hirds. Make the right decision as we are bigger than the Hirds. Well done Bomber and players you rose above the intended disruption to the club - well done proud of you all.

LOL how weak is an online poll in the AFL pages, where clearly the vast majority of opposing fans and the trolls are all going to vote for Hird's sacking...
Was this your idea Michael Warner or Grant Baker? Cheap guys, really cheap.

The amount of bullying Tania has received is awful!!! Bullying starts from
the top she has not said anything we did not know already.

Well said Mickey D. I concur wholeheatedly. Please print your comments on Jobe Watson's facebook page.

James, walk away with dignity while you still can.

  • Mooroolbark Mick - 10 years ago

Very Edwardian comment expecting James to tell his mere wife to "shut up"! What happened to equality of sexes? But then again both the media and AFL are both boy's clubs.

  • Grant - 10 years ago

You're living in Disneyland Mickey. If he bleeds Red and Black he'd have owned up taken his medicine and walked away long ago.

If the Hird camp felt they had anything to feel guilty about, why would they risk opening a further can of worms?
They have done this, because they have suffered personally, professionally and had their reputations tarnished for the very fact they love the Essendon FC.
I am disgusted at the number of Essendon supporters laying into James and Tania, thinking that this is about selfish, egotistical and narcissistic behaviour; as if they are putting their needs ahead of the club, or attempting to overshadow, the wonderful Dustin Fletcher milestone game.
The reason the truth has not seen the light of day and the reason that the arrogant and soon to be departing AFL Boss's involvement, bully tactics and tip-offs have not come out via a courtroom showdown; is because the Hird's bleed Red & Black, and put the needs of the club ahead of their own.
Shame on you Essendon faithful, turning Tania's comments into some (me,me,me,me diatribe), when they are simply calling the AFL for what they really are. Essendon, was going to be significantly punished, they wanted the prized scalp of James, and they knew that a courtroom would expose them as the bully in the playground, and faced with the prospect of tougher sanctions on the club........ James, (with all the selfless characteristics he showed on the field), put his head over the professionally damaged reputational ball, and took the head clash, which had him bleeding for his club once more.
The other teams supporter bases are going to be brutal, they'll kick the boots in and all I can say is that "Haters are gonna Hate!!!"
However, to see the Essendon faithful turn on James, is akin to treason when all he has done is hold his ground, knowing the truth of the whole scenario, (which due to his own selflessness), will not get it's day rightful day in court.
Therefore, I put this down to supporter fatigue.....
It's been an awful 13 months, but we can't let that feeling of wanting this fully behind us detract from the quality of our leader and favourite son.... Equally, if we have felt fatigue, put yourselves in James, Tania and the families shoes, to get some context on what fatigue feels like......
James, feels sick about the risks his young men endured through the poor governance of their supplements program. He was hurting right through their on and off field duress and the fact tha some Essendon and non club supporters are 'calling him weak for not taking ownership of outcomes sooner'; I say that what greater strength of character and conviction can you ask for? when he has taken the personal tarnishing of his reputation by falling on the grenade in order to save the sanctity and safety of the rest of the platoon.... ,
We should be thanking the Hird camp, for taking the shrapnel directly, allowing us supporters the chance to see our beloved Bombers playing for premiership points this year and knowledge that we will build from this adversity.
Great job Tania.... Stand by your terrific husband,
And on behalf of the Essendon faithful....

    Thank you.

    Mick.

The thing that stands out above all else is that James Hird is the innocent victim. Sure he was Head Coach but he can't know everything going on with the team and surely there are other people at the club who look after the players physical well-being. And anyway he is now doing an MBA to learn about governance. The AFL is just money hungry, the Essendon supporters just want to hang pennants on their walls.

The important thing is that James Hird's name be cleared, he is up their with the greats and must remain there at all costs. I grew up watching James Hird and loving football as a result. The AFL should put on a special themed round when he resumes from his suspension and call it "Returned Champions Round."

  • Divadebs - 10 years ago

It all depends on whether Essendon we're complicit in the whole saga. If indeed Hird was the sole mastermind of the whole sorry debacle then I would say the club may be justified in removing him. After all surely just letting sleeping dogs lie is best for at the stage. But if the club knew what was going on and sanctioned it then it is nothing short of betrayal to not stand behind him after everything that has gone down.

Well done Tania for sticking up for your husband and your family, it must be so hard on your kids.
    Good on you.

  • BillStevens - 10 years ago

Tania Hird and Caroline Wilson actually have one thing in common,
They both believe the AFL is an “All boys club”, and basically a less than transparent dictatorship with no investigative powers or appropriate internal review system and no actual democratic provisions to remove people from their positions.
This is possibly because they have be so concerned with expanding the competition, squeezing the most money out of it to the point now where external government or public reviews into AFL protocols needs to be evaluated and addressed.
But surely this is a separate issue from James hird? What has this got to do with a phone call? Is Tania Hird Wonder women?
The 7.30 report doses have a story to tell but it is not with Dean Bailys Lawyer and has nothing to do with James Hird.
Dose Tania need or long for her own TV show? Where she tells everyone how she doesn’t want to go to France?
I Think she would be good on “Ex footballers/coaches wives” tell us about the world! Where to get a good fake tan and which salon does a root free die blonde?
She can take notes on world events and report them to the United Nations about Evil Doctor Demetrio, who lied about trying to help us; we don’t need that kind of help.
All I think is sad, sad, and sad. For some people face book just isn’t enough, they need to take as much attention away from anything because of her and her husband’s ego. Tania, there really is more important things going on in the world then you and James and kids going to France, please, leave Essendon alone, leave football alone.
At this rate, James will be lucky to get a job with Jason Akermanis on some local community radio in Dubo covering the under 12 local netball.

  • Sick of Media and AFL - 10 years ago

I am sick of the media and the attacks on Essendon especially by the Herald Sun. They name and shame players who have not been found guilty of any wrong doing and potentially ruin lives not just the players but their families too . What about players who have proven to have taken illegal drugs (tested positive) and have a three and your out policy and yet these players are not named after even one offence. they are protected. They are breaking the law and could face criminal charges but no we won't report on that!!! Double Standards, mmm interesting where you get your information from, gee who has to benefit from it, oh yeah the AFL. Why are you just going after the Hirds, what about the bullying that was brought up in the show last night not just by the Hirds. Oh convienently forgotten that part haven't you Jon Anderson. Right the full story Jon. Oh yeah this wont be put in as it is against the Heriald Sun and we cant have that can we!!!!

cheating is cheating anyway you look at it but i dont think he is the only one

  • David - 10 years ago

Not saying the AFL handled this saga well, not saying they didn't.

I will say, however, that James Hird should be sacked. Not because of last night's interview, but because of what was happening at Essendon under his tenure. He obviously wasn't/isn't ready to be a senior coach and his actions show this. He has brought the game into disrepute.

Lets not talk about anyone else at the AFL or Essendon, we can do that at another time. But in James Hirds case, he needs to go.

  • Annette - 10 years ago

Well said Tania. The AFL are pathetic bullies and not just with James and Essendon. Good on the Lawyers and yes even Jeff Kennett for speaking out about what goes on with the AFL. All this talk about sacking Hird, yet if what Tania says is true (and yes I believe her) then why should Andrew Demetriou be allowed to continue in his job for the remainder of the year. Do us all a favor Andrew and leave now.

  • John Beckworth - 10 years ago

I strongly disagree Jon. The AFL have handles this whole saga poorly. They should be made accountable.
Are the media afraid of the truth as well??

  • Diane Trask - 10 years ago

Oh yes! Hird injected the players, he cheated. Well where the hell is the infraction notices. No where to be found

  • Geoff - 10 years ago

Until Hird, Little and Demetriou have all gone, the bitter taste of this whole situation will linger. Hird was obviously a major part of a systematic program of drug cheating, Little has no backbone whatsoever, and Demetriou ... well, is it against corporate law to warn the team of the impending investigation? Would he have phone Eddie if it ws Collingwood? I doubt it. I cannot comprehend how anyone, Essendon supporter or not, would want such a selfish, tainted man as their coach - especially as they currently have arguably the second-best coach in the AFL in that position! Tell Hird and his rather inadvisably opinionated wife to take a hike, replace Little with someone who truly cares about Essendon, the supporters and their brand, and Demetriou .. well, thak goodness he is going. Where to no-one know, but hopefully as far away from the AFL as possible.

  • Mick - 10 years ago

James Hird has done wonderful things for the club his entire life, and it is to James and his family's defence of their honor that you all attack!? Take a step back and view this from a different perspective. James has accepted his punishment for what happened, whether true or not (as I believe so), and will return to the club for the 2015 season. He will be welcomed back with arms wide open, and that will be that. No, nothing will be swept under the carpet and forgotten, but this will prove to all that James Hird and the Essendon Football Club will rise above, and do what we are sworn to do; To win the Premiership Flag, as ONE.

  • PTR - 10 years ago

Tania, what if AD did covertly warn DE of the pending investigation, it was your husband that ‘signed off’ on the systematic injecting of young men under his supervision. James has become wealthy on the back of his talent via the AFL. If Hird is never seen or heard again, I would not be sorry. Tania, it is people like you that give lawyers a bad name.

  • Interested - 10 years ago

Why should the Hird's shut up and go away, seems they feel they have a right to voice their concerns over information they were given prior to the report being released and the person who leaked that information seems to be Andrew Demetriou who now appears to be diving for cover.

There is no smoke without fire and James Hird seems to be the "patsy" for the AFL, hopefully he recorded the conversation as well as his wife taking notes. I am inclined to believe the Hirds and Essendon need to be careful or they and Andrew Demetriou will end up in a court of law.

  • Kate - 10 years ago

Go Tania! She is standing up for the truth and her family! I'm sick of the people telling the truth being made out to be trouble makers! Fess up AFL

  • Richo - 10 years ago

Hey Phil..just a thought..she could have said no to doing a sit down reveal all interview! She chose to do it and whilst she may be defending the honour of her man, has left her husband looking the worser for the comments. Mud slinging never helps anyone does it?

  • Josie - 10 years ago

"Cashed Up Bogans" is not very respective of Andrew Demetriou and Mike Fitzpatrick et al.

Executives often earn many more millions of dollars than these gentlemen, without anywhere near the brand value of the AFL.

Cheap shots such as the 'CUB' statement do little to elevate our game.

Cheap shots make good headlines and sell a few newspapers.

It's time people realised the AFL is a business and like all businesses, it can raise prices in the absence of competition and pay market rates for talent as required.

Why is it acceptable for Lance Franklin to earn a guaranteed $10 million?

If Franklin was to kick 100 goal a season for the next 10 years, that is $10,000 per goal well spent for all the PR value he brings to Sydney - where there is competition for eyeballs on TV.

    Josie
P.S. I am not in any way connected with either the AFL or any of their executives.

So, Essendon* will talk about sakcing Hird because he or his kool aid customers keep speaking out to portray him as an innocent victim. Yet Essendon* failed to take a stand last year and send him on his way for leading the charge of the prick brigade, when it mattered most.

Neither party has shown any real signs of genuine remorse or acceptance.

Moreover, Hird's willingness to take everyone down with him is actually quite frightening. Shakespearean almost.

Should have stayed on the couch Hirdy. You didn't need the money, but as we're learning now, your ego needed stroking and you couldn't help yourself but to come back and save the club from the horrors of Matthew Knights.

    This is going well.

  • who cares - 10 years ago

people with too much money and too much time on their hands....you can't tell me that his wife's comments were made when they were made and that it wasn't all calculated and planned, as a way to make him out to be a victim in all of this. This is about him protecting his massive ego, without any consideration for the young men who health future is somewhat uncertain. He needs to be sacked and send a clear message that cheating is not tolerated in any form!

If you don't want the hird family to comment leave them alone , don't sit out the front of their house ,don't badger them for interviews move on
