At what age did you tell your child or were you told you or they had autism or ASD?

My 7 year old was diagnosed this past year and I told him about his Autism about 2 months ago. Ours is a different story though because he was born an extreme preterm, which we've always talked about, so discussing his Autism flowed naturally one day from another discussion about his lengthy NICU stay. I wasn't sure what he'd think but he appeared pretty happy to know.

Kim Bouwer - it's never too late, finding someone to work with your son could help his quality of life even if the help didn't begin until he's 20, I hope you find something :)

My son was diagnosed when he was 2 so I started to look into autism. I then realized that I was also and my older son was too. Both of us are "high functioning" but it explains why I had such a hard time in school and after. My older son has trouble with socializing, eye contact and OCD problems. I love them no matter how they are.

The school my son attended refused to do any testing during kindergarten, and fought me all through first grade too. I finally got them to do the tests at the end of first grade. I also sought outside tests as well. It was determined that he is on the spectrum, with a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. We told him during summer break before second grade. It has been a very difficult process and we are still seeking outside sources for help, assistance, understanding, services, etc. We're in a different city now, so it's like starting all over.

I told my son a week after he was officially diagnosed. I felt it was important for him to know ASAP. He knew he was different and saw life differently to his peers, but did not understand why. I had the help of a fantastic Specialst ASD support worker, who helped me to find a great way of sitting my son down and talking to him, telling him was the best thing I ever did, it was the turning point in his life, and ours, because he was able to understand everything more clearly. It was harder to explain to my husband and his family, as they were in denial.

son aged now 20yrs diagnosed with anger issues but ticks every box. struggles to read and write. sleeps st 2am. hoards things. cant throw anything away. struggles with hygiene. wont eat in front of people. cant percieve right from wrong. speech difficulties. very small looks more like he his 14 years. taken every day as it comes and as a family if we havent coped than we take it hour by hour but have to say he has the biggest softest heart as shown by all the animals he brings home. this is the first time on reading your site that he is on the autism spectrum but as he is considered an adult it is very hard to get any assistance or diagnosis. its been a very long and lonely road thinking it was just us. would not change anything. would have loved this information years ago.

It was only after many years of struggling in my relationship with my wife that someone finally suggested that my behaviour might be explained by an autism spectrum disorder. We went and saw two separate professionals, and I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.
