@Douglas I get your concerns with the short time limits. However, as the other poster said, most of the polls were subjected to inconvenient time limits as well, where one side of the world had an advantage of being mostly awake, so it's not really as if this book was singled out. I understand this poll is being more scrutinized because it was such a close race though. In addition, I'm actually not sure how accurate it is to imply that Captive Prince has a larger international fanbase, or doesn't have a mainly large US audience too (I am from the US too), and it's just that we were perhaps more motivated (?) to stay up and campaign. Fantasy is of course a huge genre, and I would think Nalini Singh and C.S. Pacat both have their popularity internationally and in the U.S. It really could have gone either way, they're both popular authors.

BTW, this in no way reflects on the quality of either of these novels, only the strange time restrictions of this poll.

  • Douglas C. Meeks - 10 years ago

Just saying that if you have a poll that only allows votes when the majority of the USA is still sleeping you did not really want a lot of competition, unless you were intentionally wanting to maximize international votes and a minimize USA votes.. Should have been at least 24 hours. The fact is that this poll was set up accidentally or on purpose to achieve the minimal number of USA votes (where the largest number of readers of this genre reside). Those are the facts. my 2 cents, its over.

Douglas, there have been other brackets at the same time on a Sunday before, as well as at other difficult times, like Thursday morning when everyone is at work, class, etc., so there's nothing new about this bracket as far as that goes and clearly didn't stop most people from voting. You must also take into account that not everyone voting is in the USA. In other parts of the world the poll ended in the evening, for instance. And in any case, both books have fans around the world and participated with the same hours. Everyone got the same fair chance.

Just in case you folks saying no cheating involved, the title of this post/poll was "Elite Eight, Round 2 (March 30 00:00 – 11:59 am CST)" It was closed with the Captive Prince ahead but who posts a poll when you can only vote between midnight and noon on a Sunday (many folks are not even out of bed on a Sunday)? Something smells a bit.

  • Lithmyathar - 10 years ago

Congrats to Captive Prince, such a well deserved win!!
To see that people simply assume that there was cheating involved is sad. Did any of you even bothered to check not only the book, but the amount of time the author spent just for the fans??? You should just check her livejournal page. Beside the "bribes" (-which are OMG!!), there are mystery bribes every turn, the funny drawings in paint..and she even bothers to reply. Didnt support cheating at all, encouraged people to read the other books from the pool. How can some of you throw "tomatoes" just because your favorite didnt win, i dont get it!
For the past mystery bribe i googled some stuff and was amazed to find fanfics based on CP, tumblr pages, deviantart fanart/fanwriting...should i even continue? I tweeted and fb-shared past polls. And i bet i am not the only one. Oh, and i voted only once and asked my husband to vote too on his pc..but since we share the router, it didnt count.
So stop being sore losers, read CP and BE AMAZED!

  • Arielle - 10 years ago

I voted once for Captive Prince. Congrats! The author has been nothing but classy and nice about everything to do with this. Never has she supported cheating and good for her!! She has an enormous international fan base so anyone who's thinking the numbers are wacky are sadly mistaken. I adore the CP series, but I think I will also be picking up a copy of HoO, since so many seem to like it.

  • jj - 10 years ago

and i kinda have to agree with fan power too. this is just a really freaking good book, read it and you won't be surprised with how well it's doing any longer;p

  • mei - 10 years ago

Phyllis, Captive Prince has never been involved in any dodgy voting. However, in round one, it was against a book whose fans were publicly endorsing cheating . You may be mixing them up. Pacat is a very sweet author who has always encouraged her fans to vote clean and been respectful to her opponents. CP is a big established fandom with a lot of voters, just like HoO, so it is expected that the votes were close.

  • jj - 10 years ago

to be brutally honest, i have no life so i've been sitting in front of my laptop for the entire day, and the scale wasn't tipping in favour of hoo even once - it was 70-150 votes behind all the time. nothing weird in trying to win in the last minutes, cp fans were sure of their victory and started resting on laurels, hence the sudden closing of the gap on the part of ms singh's readers

also, even though the argument about all the lgbt fans voting for cp does hold some merit, it'd be cool to remember that cp eliminated arguably the most popular lgbt author in its first round. so yeah, i really don't get why the surprise. i'd even risk saying that it might win the whole tournament, but, being a cp fan, i don't want to jinx it, bc obviously that's what i'm counting on;p

  • fan power - 10 years ago

Wow, people who haven't heard of or read Captive Prince accusing fans of cheating. Maybe read the book and you'll understand why it has a worldwide fandom who have been following it for five years?

  • Niki - 10 years ago

Yes!!! Captive prince!!! I love this book so much, also to the person saying she has been rewriting this book in several forms for 5 years. What are you talking about? No matter, good voting HoO fans! It was an awesome fight! Goodjob CP fans!!!:D

  • Nancy J Silberstein - 10 years ago

Voted from my laptop-my smart phone and my Kindle. Them's the rules!

    CAPTIVE PRINCE RULES!!!

  • Eloise - 10 years ago

Don´t forget that Captive Prince is the last LGBT in the competition. All the fans of this genre are supporting Pacat now. I believe that Captive Prince got its own fans´s votes + LGBT genre fans´s vote.

  • Severine - 10 years ago

Why is the poll still open...20 minutes after it is supposed to be closed?

  • GB - 10 years ago

Phyllis - Why do you think that Captive Prince has only a few fans? She's been writing the story in various forms for five years.

  • Elkaja - 10 years ago

Shouldn't this poll be closed now?

  • onyx - 10 years ago

Interesting, though, that in the minutes AFTER the polls is supposed to be over, the scale is tipping in favor of "Heat of Obsidian."

  • jo - 10 years ago

Phyllis, I only voted once for CP. I'm sure there are many other fans who did the same - and many that voted on as many devices as they could. Just like I'm sure there are many HoO fans who voted multiple times on multiple devices and many HoO fans who only voted once. Just like in every round on dabwaha that's close.

  • Severine - 10 years ago

Phyllis, you've lost me! LOL!! How did you come up with 300 and 1900? I'm sure fans of both authors read the same rules and are using multiple devices. The vote is close so both groups must be doing the same thing. BTW, I'm not a fan of either books, but for the bracket sake, I chose one over the other. So no vested interest except I want my bracket pick to win.

    Have a great day everyone!!

  • Phyllis - 10 years ago

Well, no, I'm not a sore loser. This vote has very little impact on my life, though I love Singh's books, it's more from the standpoint of someone who thinks life should be at least nominally fair. I know it's not always possible.

So what you're saying is that Captive Prince has 300 fans and Heart of Obsidian has 1900, we're just not as rabid? And do tell how every single one of those votes is *not* because there are a few people voting 200 times?

  • Severine - 10 years ago

LOL! JJ, was just asking that myself!

  • Nei - 10 years ago

    Quoted from the rules update:

"It’s one thing to use your phone, your laptop, your mom’s phone, the free McDonald’s WiFi down the street and your school library hookup, then going to get your grandpa’s cell phone.

It’s another entirely to reload your browser and vote endlessly over and over. One is effort (and also hilarious). The other is exploiting a loophole."

So as long as they didn't use one of those methods that reload your IP forever and just used a bunch of devices, free wifi areas and whatnot, it's supposed to be part of the fun. Given the huge amount of votes for both books, I'm sure a lot of voters did just that!

  • jj - 10 years ago

also, shouldn't the poll be closed by now?

  • jj - 10 years ago

    somebody's a sore loser:)

  • Severine - 10 years ago

Phyllis, you CAN vote six times as long as it is on SIX different devices!! You CANNOT vote six times on the SAME device!! Thems da rules!!

    Severine.

  • Phyllis - 10 years ago

Captive Prince... isn't that one of the two who were in a dodgy voting shoot-out? And "I've already voted six times" is some sort of excuse???? Isn't that what the rules were trying to stop?

  • TheDreamSeller - 10 years ago

I've read Captive Prince right after the first poll and I'm going to support it as far as it gets.

  • Lithmyathar - 10 years ago

I love Nalini Singh's books, but Captive Prince is one of the best series i ever read! Vote CAPTIVE PRINCE, we need that sneak peak!!

  • Lis - 10 years ago

Voting Captive Prince from UK because great book and classy author!

  • yo - 10 years ago

(*wake, but then you probably already knew that, SORRY)

  • yo - 10 years ago

9:21 am in warsaw. not wanting to waking up early on sundays is probably one of the dodgiest european tactics

  • Robert - 10 years ago

Natasha, at about the time you were seeing rapid voting, the author had released a blog post about CP moving on to the next round. It's not unexpected that people following the blog would then vote for it.

  • L - 10 years ago

Would just like to say that no matter how the numbers may appear right now (I firmly believe it's just an enthusiastic and dedicated international fandom), the author and fandom have done all they can possibly do to stop any dodgy tactics and encourage the voters to be respectful of the competition. Fingers crossed for Captive Prince (:

  • Library addict - 10 years ago

I hope the Psy/Changeling fans wake up . I know Captive Prince is a popular book, but I have to root for Heart of Obsidian.

  • Sara - 10 years ago

It's 8:00am in Italia. I have voted for captive prince 6 times now from three computer, two mobiles and a tablet. Legit. I'm waiting to 10:00am to start calling friends and family. Legit. I will go out for lunch and use free wifi to vote again. Legit.
Please before acussing check good reads, tumbrl, twitter. There is a fandom and that fandom is organized and moving.Tks

  • Alexis - 10 years ago

Nothing funny with the numbers for Captive Prince. I am not only awake after a night's sleep, but also already at work. I got to vote both from home and from work. The numbers would react as, say, the European fans wake up and the US fans go to sleep and then shift again probably. But the author of Captive Prince fas been very clear in her campaing that no multiple votes from the same IP should spam the polls nor did she ever promote shifty tactics. And she's always been very respectful of her competition.

  • Rose P - 10 years ago

Its not 1am everywhere in the world. Captive Prince has a big international fanbase, and it is not funny business just because it is getting a lot of votes. I just voted for it on mine and my husband's phone and laptops here in Oz where it is 430pm. I did the same for Beverly Jenkins last round, and she had similar numbers. These authors have run clean and classy campaigns. If there is anything strange going on the organisers have said they can track it easily and will disqualify BOTH books, and everyone is aware of this. So, there is no need to make accusations. Lets all just enjoy the competition.

  • Kriszta - 10 years ago

Natasha, there are a couple hundred of people in the CP fanclub on GR who started voting at once (myself included) when the voting when live (I voted once so far). Nothing funny is happening, it will probably stabilize.

  • Natasha - 10 years ago

3 mins later...159. Guess the person doing it is not even reading the comments. Just manically hitting reload and vote...too bad I need sleep and can't observe this any longer

  • Natasha - 10 years ago

5 minutes later....its at 142...I find this strangely fascinating. Now I'm just waiting to see when it stabilizes...

  • Natasha - 10 years ago

And by the time I finished typing the comment above the votes are at 128....

  • Natasha - 10 years ago

Hate to say this...but there seems to be some funny business happening on the voting for captive prince. I logged in to vote at 1:17am est. I kept refreshing the screen because I noticed that the votes for captive prince went up by 2 votes by the time I was done voting. In the next two minutes the votes for captive prince went from 81 to 96.I find it difficult to believe that so many people voted at the same time....
