What do you do with the plastic cases your tools come in?

I keep some and toss most. I keep my Milwaukee circ saw and recip saw in their cases because they are about the only tools I use outside my shop.

Well, I lied(in part): the blow-molded plastic cases I trash immediately, the Festool Systainers I either strip and repurpose or sell on the FOG forum. 20 years ago when I was a trim carpenter I would have been all about the systainers, now I work exclusively in my shop and they're just a PITA.

But I didn't really lie, I don't keep tools in them!

I agree that they're bulky and take up space, and there must be a better way, I just haven't thought of what that might be. Since my shop is also my garage, space is tough to come by no matter what, so I've stuck with the cases rather than build new shelving to accommodate them.

I am OCD about caring for my tools. They never get put away until cleaned. My neighbor works for a used tool store and he often has extra cases. I use my rotary tool to cut out inside sections to fit my tools that do not have their own case. The cases are easier to stack & store plus it helps protect them when I drive south for the winter and north for the summer.

I USUALLY toss them, but not always. I kept one router case, for the rare times when I have to leave the shop to work. I kept the one that was molded around the socket set I got for daddy day. My biscuit joiner came in a real steel box, I kept it, good thing too, as the biscuit joiner does not get used much anymore. Hey, those plastic cases are usually a number 2 poly, okay to toss them in the green bin with your milk jug.
