Would having a mentor help you as a writer?

I don't look at it as a "short-cut." Somewhere along our journey in the apprenticeship as a writer, I believe we all need some guidance and encouragement. I view a mentor like a coach as someone who has been there, and can offer helpful advice and tidbits to help a writer become even better. :)

Having a mentor would be great, but not really necessary. Problem with mentorship in writing is that a mentor will only make you to write as he would, not as you, the writer, would. I'd much prefer discovering my style of writing on my own. It's like everything else in life: a journey. Why take a short-cut?
