What do you think of Princess Twilight now that we have had a season of her?

    @Stacie

Implying this wouldn't be the biggest cop out of them all.

  • LanceFox - 10 years ago

I voted other mainly because I feel that Princess Twilight as a character hasn't done anything. With her becoming a princess I was hoping that we would see far more new lands using her as a diplomat. This would have allowed so many opportunities for the main 6 to travel the world. For this season I felt the writers were far to busy appeasing the Bronies by showing that she hadn't changed and that they were still friends. This bothers me more because of the idea that their friendship was worth fighting for that should include big life changes and distance. Rainbow and Rarity will have careers that will take them all over the world but nobody seems to mind so why is Twilight different? Hopefully the writers will follow what they want for season 5 otherwise I will just stick with the comics.

  • GIGA - 10 years ago

@Stacie You're absolutely right, GOD BLESS YOU.

  • Tenor Sounds - 10 years ago

I like the changes and think her evolution as a character and princess has been interesting and worth exploring. I have faith in the writers and am optimistic that the show will continue to be enjoyable.

Or, you know. It's the end of the world. Same thing.

  • Stacie - 10 years ago

"I don't mind either way" has most votes, so seeing that and the fact that 'I miss the old Twilight' has quite an amount of votes too even for being 3rd place, more people would be happy about turning her back to a unicorn than the people who wants to keep her this way would be disappointed. This shows that turning her back is the best option generally.

  • Don - 10 years ago

I like the growth of the "6" cast, Makes it come alive.
I guess some people never grow into who they must become.
They just grow tired. Never grow tired of the Adventure no mater how small.

  • Jordan - 10 years ago

I don't like it, turning her into a princess was and is completely unnecessary.

  • sea serpent - 10 years ago

    @Hater You're damn right.

  • Hater - 10 years ago

The new alicorn twilight ruined MLP...
thsis sucks, and its the reason Lauren Faust QUIT!!!
    *flips table!*
*throws paper on ground and smashes in anger!!!*
-worst thing to happen to MLP!!!!!!

  • Lara - 10 years ago

Twilight got boring after becoming a princess. I'm very disappointed because she was my favorite prior to it, now my former second favorite has become my first. Sure it's a good thing for who's my favorite pony now, but I still really miss unicorn Twilight. :(

  • Pony not a Brony - 10 years ago

    I voted other because

    well

we just haven't seen much of Twilight this season :U

She is supposed to be the main character, right?

  • Eeveexpert - 10 years ago

    Other.

Wings or not, I have never really cared for Twilight. I do not miss the old Twilight. I miss when I actually had the drive to get up in the AM to catch a stream of the newest episode.

In the s3-s4 interim, I joked with friends that I was going to keep a running tally of how many episodes that pushed Ali!Twi to get the story rolling could have been done with Uni!Twi. That list is damn short, because they DON'T USE IT. Therefore, it begs to be asked, what was the damn point?

tl;dr: The wings turned out to be exactly what I thought they'd be. Unnecessary, unneeded, and utterly unused.

  • M6003dt47 - 10 years ago

I haven't really seen anything that would make her a true princess. She doesn't have a kingdom to rule, she has lost sight in her past lessons from previous reasons, and she still can't fly well after more than half the season is over. Overall, I'm indecisive with this question....

  • DyingBreed - 10 years ago

I think it's an interesting idea but it's hardly ever touched upon. I'd definitely like to see it explored in further detail--it's only been mentioned in a couple of episodes so far (The opener and the Blue Flu episode. Not sure if I'm missing anything in between).

The "Princess Twilight Sparkle" episode(s) especially felt like a missed opportunity. Twilight suddenly being in charge, her new status making her more important than her friends, whether or not she now needs to be protected...these were all very interesting concepts (especially the first one), yet they seem to be forgotten almost instantly after they're introduced.

  • Frith - 10 years ago

There are 14 thousand votes and only 40 comments. I think that the comments here and on EqD don't reflect the surveys because of motivation. I think that in general, people are more motivated to complain or tease/troll than they are to try and express why they like something. It's also easier to complain. Less effort, more motivation, more volume. ^_^

  • A - 10 years ago

Well it seems that many people like the new twilight, but it is also very possible that the audiance who disliked the new twilight gave up on the series and therefore are not a part of this vote.

  • TMNT - 10 years ago

    @TKLNT So much this

  • Millstone - 10 years ago

My only problem with Princess Twilight has been the taxi queue scene.
Her being the same old Twilight for her friends and most of Ponyville is normal.
I am okay with her having next to no political responsability yet. It is magic princeliness.
    But come on, Manehattan!

  • nope - 10 years ago

The whole thing feels dumb and forced. Her princesshood is completely ignored most of the time, and her wings aren't used very often either. Now I know what you're gonna say, you're gonna be all like "wut do u want every episode to be all about her princesshood?!?!" No, I'd rather it not happen in the first place because as S4 as proven, it was a dumb, forced change.

  • iSharingan - 10 years ago

Honestly, I don't mind new twilight's look. If that's all there was to this, I'd have no problem either way. Unfortunately it's not all; since becoming twilicorn, she has seemingly become even more socially awkward and a bit of a klutz. The day they stop playing up these attributes is the day I can finally return to not caring about twilicorn's transformation like I felt back at Magical Mystery Cure.

  • Rainbow Pastel - 10 years ago

Princess Twilight looks pretty. It shows how the ponies are growing more and more throughout the show. And Rainbow Dash will eventually become a Wonderbolt and the CMC will get their cutie marks someday.
I like her either way as long as she still has her quirkiness.

  • hugo - 10 years ago

    @TKLNT Tell me about it.

  • TKLNT - 10 years ago

I wish unicorn Twilight would be back, she used to be my favorite character.

  • Elysa - 10 years ago

I didn't care for Twilight in season 1-3, now I hate her because what made me not care about her before is more evident now.

  • Somebrony - 10 years ago

Before S4, I was seriously worried they would end up abusing the princessy stuff but it turns out they under-played it so much so far that one could almost wonder what was the point - what little princessy stuff she did in S4, she could have done if Celestia had simply promoted her to some official authority position so she could delegate more responsibilities to her.

  • Kicks_McGee - 10 years ago

Princess Twilight is good, and she should feel good.

  • Chaos - 10 years ago

I don't really care. I adapted to the change since she became a princess. I love the show to much to dislike any character, but that's just me.

  • tenco1 - 10 years ago

Other, because I didn't like her before, but now I REALLY don't like her.

  • DeltaResero - 10 years ago

With the passing of each season, it seems to become more evident that ultimately, Twilight is a Mary Sue.

  • Rockpath5 - 10 years ago

When I say I miss the old Twilight, I mean I miss the pre-Lesson Zero Twilight in season 1 and The Return of Harmony. I haven't liked her since then.

  • Passerby - 10 years ago

Sorry, I forgot to add several more things! Where's my head today? Lol.

Celestia would have also seen that Twilight truly is the element of Magic because, while defeating the villain, Twilight would have shown exemplary skills. Also, Twilight's decision that she needs her friends to help in the fight shows how far she has come to rely on friendship. Remember the very first episode in Season One? Twilight, while on her way to Ponyville for the first time, tells Spike that the fate of Equestria does not depend on her making friends. Yes, we see the Mane Six defeating Nightmare Moon, but if you think about it, Nightmare Moon only terrorized Ponyville. Defeating her would potentially keep her from wreaking havoc onto the rest of Equestria, but she hadn't done much of any damage before the Elements were used against her.

In my mind, it would have been so much better to go the alicorn Twilight route at the end of Season Four because, if you look at the synopsis, the WHOLE of Equestria joins forces in hopes of defeating the enemy in the finale. What does that tell us? The whole of Equestria is in peril. We have never seen the entire country getting involved in a war, so whoever is threatening our little ponies is probably the most powerful character we have seen yet, especially if all three of the princesses can't defeat it.

I think if Twilight became a princess at the end of Season Four, there would be more of a connection to her words at the very beginning of the show. I think it would also encapsulate her entire character journey.

So far in Season Four, her "princess role" episodes could have easily been adjusted for her unicorn self. She could have still gone into the Everfree Forest with her friends to return the Elements. Zecora's potion could have easily been rewritten in the script to state that only powerful magic-wielders can handle it. The end of the second episode where we see Twilight perform a magic-enhanced "Twi-boom" could have been changed to where Twilight was already standing on the platform with Luna and Celestia and just shot a...pink sparkly burst...into the sky with her horn. No biggie.
She barely got recognition from any other pony for being a princess except for Twilight Time, which could have easily been rewritten to show the foals oggling over the CMC for hanging out with Celestia's Number One Student, especially since Twilight was a part of the Summer Sun Celebration.
Testing 1, 2, 3, could have just featured Twilight deciding to take an air balloon up to Rainbow in the clouds. It would make for a great episode since we don't really see much of that (it would also tie into the opening theme song since we see her riding one then). We know that she, or one of the other Mane Five have one, in Return of Harmony where they use it to catch Rainbow.
"Trade Ya" could have just had Twilight as an ambassador since she's the understudy to Celestia. It would also hint at how highly Celestia thinks of Twilight, considering that only princesses have been ambassadors in the past. Twilight could have still handled it as a regular unicorn, considering that ponies don't fight much anyway.

  • Passerby - 10 years ago

I was skeptical about Twilight's ascension from the start. In my opinion, something more dynamic should have happened to make her a princess. We still don't even know what Starswirl was intending to do with the spell that she fixed in MMC. Here's what I think. Though I really don't like the whole "Twilight Princess" thing, the way that the Season Four finale has been introduced to us makes it seem in my opinion to be a better part of the show for Twilight to become a princess. Here's why:

Season Four mentions that Celestia chooses Discord over Twilight to track down some baddies. Unicorn Twilight would still have been disappointed that she was not chosen instead because she is used to accomplishing tall tasks that Celestia has given her in the past (especially when she was sent to help Cadence out with saving an entire empire from Sombra). She could easily go into one of her famed worry-wart episodes, paranoid that she isn't good enough, that she failed in some way.

Her paranoia would drive her to over-work herself trying to strengthen her already powerful magic, because she thinks Celestia sees her as "too weak" to face the villain(s). The entire episode could be centered on Twilight's friends helping her to calm down and to trust Celestia's judgement. All through Season Four, I have seen Twilight be the one to give her friends advice (almost irritatingly over the top "mother" role). For example, in Castle Mane-ia, we see her telling her friends not to be afraid. She has to be the one to restore order. The way she was portrayed, however, made her appear that she was quieting frightened fillies, rather than speaking to her friends on equal terms. It would be nice to see her be the one who needs help for once, just so that she remains a "real" character, one who is not perfect, and one with relatable problems.

The second part of the finale states that, in order to save all of Equestria, the princesses must transfer their power to Twilight. I think this episode would have been more dynamic if Twilight were still a unicorn. We know that unicorns are not naturally as powerful as alicorns, and that power can corrupt (Trixie, anyone?). The fact that the princesses would trust unicorn Twilight with their magic shows how much they believe in her. Don't get me wrong, power transference to alicorn Twilight would still show the same dynamics, but I think it would have been much more epic to see a unicorn carry that power. Why would they give it all to Twilight to defeat the villain(s)? They realize that their powers are not good enough unless they are combined with the magic of friendship! Twilight, who tries to fight the villain alone, can't defeat him/her which makes her realize that she needs her friends, the other elements! In that moment, her "key" appears and the box (which is assumedly nearby) opens to reveal the Rainbow Power.

The enemy is defeated, and then Celestia makes Twilight a princess because Twilight proves that she is capable of wielding alicorn magic. Her kingdom could somehow appear in Season Five (maybe the finale). Remember how Cadence became a princess far before her empire appeared? The same could happen with Twilight. Season Five would involve her getting used to being a princess, and some magical event could happen where the Tree of Harmony produces the master key to her kingdom.

    Just a theory. Thoughts?

Nigger Bitch Monkey Fucker Twilight needs to be beaten to a fucking pulp

  • John A - 10 years ago

    Somebody lynch that Kenyan motherfucker!!

  • Burnt-out Lightbulb - 10 years ago

I like how the show is handling her, mostly, but I DESPISE how the fandom is.

They keep portraying her as a self-entitled douchebag that abuses power she doesn't deserve to get whatever she wants, whenever she wants, be as much of a jackoff as she pleases and not have to face consequences, be above the law, etc.

It's annoying as fuck. This is kinda what caused me to dislike it in the first place.

In the show, however, she's fine. Mostly. She has yet to prove to me that she deserves her little "ascension," but I can tolerate it for now.

@TheDude Just wait until the season finale and you'll see he stupid kingdom.

  • GAlekz - 10 years ago

I miss old Twiley so much...

  • Other - 10 years ago

I dislike new Twilight, but not because of her new title. I dislike her because her voice acting and character have gone entirely stale.

  • lordelliott - 10 years ago

Other: I don't think we've seen enough of Twilight this season to really know. She's been a supporting character too much.

  • TheDude - 10 years ago

D'oh! I got the name of the game mixed with the song. The game I was referring to is "Long Live the Queen" Sorry!

  • TheDude - 10 years ago

You know, even though she is a Princess, how much has really changed with her? She doesn't have her own castle or kingdom or divine portfolio (Celestia is in charge of the sun, Luna is in charge of the moon AND ponies' dreams, Twilight is in charge of... books?). She couldn't even get a cab in Manehattan!

All she has really done is boss a few guards around in the season premiere and overview a Trader Exchange in Rainbow Falls. Oh, and she has a new pair of wings that took her about an episode to get used to. Other than that, she's still the adorable bookworm we all know and love.

If anything, I hope the writers give her responsibilities more fitting of her status before the season ends. In a visual novel game, God Save the Queen, you control a 14 year old girl that has to act as Queen due to the untimely demise of her mother. The protagonist, Elodie, had to negotiate with other nations over ownership of territories, decide the fates of criminals, and lead her nation through civil war and invasion.

I want to see Princess Twilight deal with situations like that. They don't need to be violent, but I bet they could think of more exciting conflicts than the one in "Trade Ya!" that was resolved in about a minute.

  • Verbose - 10 years ago

I wasn't thrilled at all at the end of Season 3, because I think it seemed like the beginning of something we all feared: that Hasbro would need to sell a certain toy/toyline, and the characters we came to know and love would have to change drastically and abruptly in order to sell the toy/toyline. That was what seemed to happen in Season 3. We all had a hint that Twilight would "ascend" from the onset, and then in one episode (or just one sequence), she went from unicorn student to alicorn princess.

But now that I've gotten to see her and the episodes, I think it was a better thing for the series than just leaving Twilight and the entire universe all the same.

Twilight didn't just *accept* her new title and role as soon as Season 4 began. Heck, many episodes focused on how uncomfortable she is with it (including the most recent one at the time of this post in "Trade Ya"). But at the same time, she's shown a lot of natural maturity from Lesson Zero to now (or even the very first episodes of Season 1 to Season 2) in terms of learning from her experiences with her friends and herself. That is expected, if not *needed,* change. Otherwise, you end up with Tom and Jerry into perpetuity.

(Not knocking classic slapstick. There are just only so many ways you can cut off a cat's tail.)

And the rest of the Mane 6 have shown bits of change like Fluttershy's slight increase in assertiveness in some episodes. All the while, they've all been true to what we've seen in their core personalities.

That's a huge credit to the writers and the staff. Perhaps they didn't want Twilight to be a princess just yet, but they seemed to make it work in a relatively short period of time. They took (possibly) forced changes and made the show work around it...to the point where the forced changes seem to me to be just part of the progress of the show. Outside of Magical Mystery Cure (which is about the best way that you could "promote" Twilight in such a short period of time,) it makes "sense" in my mind that Twilight became a princess. Nothing has happened that has made me think while watching the show "This is essentially a toy commercial for little girls," even though that's what it essentially is.

I'd be iffy about the finale of Season 4 if I hadn't seen how the show's been directed and executed up to this point. I don't think I'd ever want to see Twilight be separated from her friends by a castle that's off in another country or even the Everfree Forest (until a series finale). But I'm much more at ease now, because I have.

I don't mind the series ending, even soon.
The staff will probably want to do different things (which is why I was really happy that M.A. Larson could take time to write books.)
The show may not be "timeless" but is superb for this period of time in entertainment (not everything can be, or should be, a timeless classic.) It may just serve its time as good, modern entertainment.

I would, however, hate to see the series turn into something that just isn't Friendship is Magic. But I don't see that happening without most of the staff just leaving in a short period of time

    --

Besides, most of us don't know what we want anyway. We didn't know we wanted (like...reeeeeeally wanted) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. We might not know that we'd really want what other changes are in store.

*tl;dr: I like Princess Twilight Sparkle no more (or less) than Twilight Sparkle the student, but the events and circumstances surrounding her ascension have done a lot more for the depth of the show and Equestria than just leaving her as a student.*

  • Ebonysdagger - 10 years ago

Hm... I'm going to have to pick Other. I haven't seen enough of her this season to decide if it was purely based off of that. I personally love that she is a princess now given that it was inevitable (and really should have happened in episode two of season 1) but due to her lack of screen time this season I can't say if it has affected her behavior in enough of a way to notice.

  • liam - 10 years ago

She's not twilight anymore, she's celestia 2, that's why she sucks now.

  • terry - 10 years ago

Twilight the princess SUCKS, I want the original twilight back.

  • Zain - 10 years ago

Twilight the AWESOME unicorn is a 1000000000000000000000x better than twilight the shitty, boring, annoying, and sucky princess.

  • Lanie - 10 years ago

I don't like Twilight as princess anymore, but I don't like where they're going with her at all. I welcomed the change after MMC and was ok with PT (both parts), but I have to admit I want her unicorn self back now. She also doesn't fit much to be a princess after thinking about it.

  • Brodzio - 10 years ago

This changes show great progression of character. I literary love this in other series, when characters grow up with time. For me it's an indicator of good show.
Same with episodes: in present season, some of them are relay poor, but some show how to deal with serious problems - it is still basic idea of MLP and that's the most important.

  • Qbe Root - 10 years ago

I watched the 3 first seasons in like a week, so I can’t really say I miss Unicorn Twilight, but her “princessyness” doesn’t seem that important for now. 4 episodes rely on her being a princess and 1 relies on her having wings… out of 22. There are also 2 more episodes where she uses more powerful magic. Wow. Meanwhile, some of the other episodes were clearly made for Unicorn Twilight: ponies don’t care she’s a princess, though they bow to her a few episodes later…

  • Duckus6 - 10 years ago

I don't mind either way. Some parts of having one of the mane 6 as a royal can be good but other parts can be hard to cope with. One thing is strange how she is slightly taller than the rest of the mane 6 though.

  • Frith - 10 years ago
