I have built a couple because they looked like a good gift or useful. I also see if there is a new skill to learn. Mostly I build things I design in sketchup.

I subscribed to several mags, thinking I'd make some of their projects but eventually go to the Internet, search vids and plans or, more often, search images and make my project based on what I like best. I recently did this with a shadow box bookcase I built. I knew I didn't want straight shelves but wanted a bunch of cubbies. There was nothing anywhere similar on line so I improvised. It turned out great.
