Def Leppard didn't master the power ballad??? Hysteria???? Love Bites???? Those two songs set the standard for power ballads during the 80s! Pyromania and Hysteria still sound fresh after all these years. I quite often play music for my high school students when they are doing independent work and almost without fail one of them always says "I love this song" when a Def Lep song comes on. I never hear that with Bon Jovi tunes. While I loved Bon Jovi during the 80s and 90s, their stuff from that era sounds dated. Def Lep's stuff stands the test of time.

Def Lep by far. 3 major albums and still going strong. Although I have to give Bon Jovi credit for still being relevant with new music all these years later. And is restaurant rocks in New Jersey too!

Bon Jovi by far. I love Def Leppard as well but Bon Jovi was much more diverse and had more than Slippery When Wet. New Jersey was a kick ass Album. They also mastered the power ballad, something Def Leppard fell short on with "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad"

I posed the question to my wife. Her answer? Bon Jovi, "because Jon was hot!" So I have to say Def Leppard. Not just because I liked their music better (and the stage show rocked in the 80's), but also on principle. Sorry, Jimmy.

Not even close. The Leps have THREE undisputed classic albums: High N Dry, Pyromania, and Hysteria. (Depends on your taste as to which one is their best, but that is another discussion). Bon Jovi, only has Slippery When Wet. While a classic in is own right, "Slippery" really pales compared to the three Def Leppard offerings.
