Do you support 'protected' bike lanes in downtown Saskatoon?

I find it interesting when people oppose bike lanes based on "increased congestion". The point of bike lanes is to make it an easier transportation option to REDUCE congestion. LESS parking spots & lanes are needed if more people are able to ride their bikes. Not to mention decreased health costs with more active lifestyles in the city.

Protected bike lanes are what they have in the Netherlands, and there are also separate stop lights for them. It's awesome being able to ride and feel safe. Also, we used to have a business downtown, and the parking for a car is onerous and expensive, much easier to hope off the bike, park it in a rack and shop.

No. The roads are conjested enough with vehicles. All this is going to do is cause road rage and have some cyclist end up in the hospital.
The only viable option I see if cutting down the trees between the sidewalk and road, and make that the bike lane.
Please don't make driving in this city any more difficult.

The Meewasin Trails are plowed and used regularly by cyclists year round. I don't see why these proposed bike lanes, which link up with the Meewasin network, should not be available year round. Montreal plows a core network of bike lanes and they get 3 times our normal snowfall. Lots of people ski through our winters, and biking, particularly with the new studded snow tires, is not any more "extreme", if we have a safe place to ride. The downtown streets are not at all safe in the winter, so I'm sure I'm not the only winter biker that avoids them at the moment.

Give it a trial but limit it to only the months of May - October. Road conditions, snow grading, the lack of bike lane usage, and safety issues during the winter months would make it not worth the while.

As a driver, I would definitely welcome protected bike lanes to keep cyclists out of traffic. Not just downtown - everywhere in the city. And as a cyclist, I'd be more apt to ride my bike around the city (not just in parks and in my residential area) if there were protected bike lanes to make it safer.
