The third place match is useless and should be removed. Who cares about wanting to see your club play one more time - all of the other losing teams don't get to play for 5, 6, 7, etc. You want to watch your team? Watch their scheduled games and get your fill. It's selfish to want more than what is deserved, especially when the clubs themselves aren't even interested in playing.

In the NHL this year, who won the series for 3rd place? In the NBA this year, who won the series for 3rd place? Who was 3rd in the NFL? Does it even matter?

When playing for a championship, only the victor matters. All losing teams fall by the wayside. We don't ask them to pick themselves back up and play yet again, for exactly no reason at all. No reason, of course, except network and sponsorship money, which I suspect is a major driving force here.

Funny, I am going to hit the big 60 this year and I have never watched any sports (except for an odd bit of the summer Olympics in the sixties) and this year I had a few moments to watch the opening game in Brazil. It made me an instant follower, OMG I don't believe it and to frank, neither did anyone I know. I can't understand WHY you wouldn't want to watch the 3rd place playoff, both if these teams rock and to get a last look at them before it's all but over is a treat.
Love it.. can't wait for the women's, I can imagine it will be excellent as well..

I also agree with kevin, these semi finalists are a bunch of spoiled brats who only want a gold cup and otherwise lose all interest. louis van gaals' opinion very much shows the football spirit in the netherlands, winning is the only thing that counts here. After the mach against Spain arrogance knew no bounds in many folks around here. Take a look at Ireland in 2012, they lost but were happy to be part of it. They were on the news entirely for their fans sportive behavior. thats how it should be.

ITS NOT THE OLYMPICS!!!! also we don't do any matches in any sport to get decided by penalty kicks. you play till the stronger team wins not decided by a goaly and one player. could you see a STANLEY CUP DECIDED BY A SHOOT OUT.. CHANGE RULE BY 2018 PLEASEEE .

It's all on how you look at the consolation final and this angle is the negative perspective. Taken another way the 3rd place game gives the coaches a chance to play their back up goal keeper who's dying to play, not to mention some of the young up coming players who benefit from the experience. Meanwhile coaches can respectfully give some veteran players honorary part games and a deserved rest.
The teams should play the game with less pressure and more imagination like they did as a kid.... the coaches should encourage this as there is nothing on the line..3rd or 4th what's the difference. The players should play without fouls or embellishment and as previously mentioned it has potential to be more entertaining than the final. The coaches and veteran players need to do this for their next wave of players carrying the torch to the future... anything else would be selfish. It may be hard but such is the sacrifice to this beautiful game!

I agree with Kevin, and so will a stadium full of fans and millions of viewers. I love having the opportunity to see my team play one more match.

In my opinion FIFA should not get rid it

Ok then Nigel, who won the bronze medal in the 2014 winter olympic biathalon? No cheating!! That "tangible and treasured reward" still doesn't make it any more memorable.

The match for third offers a chance at redemption for the team that played so well to get so far. It is a chance for fans to cheer on their team one last time. I'd bet if Canada were in the 3rd place match the coverage would be a little bit different. This story just appeals to everyone who doesn't care about the Beautiful Game and further diminishes interest and any hope we have of becoming a world-class football nation.

We'll never host or even qualify at this rate...

The biggest surprise here is that Manchester has an upscale suburb.
