I'm not a fan of common core at all. I am available and willing to help my kids with their homework, but they're teaching things so differently that i often have no idea what they're trying to do and if I try to teach the kids *my* way, they don't get credit, even when they're able to get the correct answers because they're doing it "wrong". Unless they let the parents in on how they're trying to teach, we can't help much. Not to mention the teachers are the trained professionals. I understand that teachers have a tough job and they have to cram a lot of material into a short time, but I'm guessing those of you who are blaming the parents don't have any school-aged kids of your own.

It's not the parents and it's not the teachers to blame. It's the politicians who are legislating not only what, but how our children should be taught.

Common Core has not worked ANYWHERE in the U.S. why would it work in the Peoples Republic of Marylandistan?

First Common Core was just put into effect this past year so too soon to tell if that is the cause of the drop or not. I don't know enough about common core to really comment. However my thoughts are that too many parents send their kids off to school and expect the teachers to be fully responsible for teaching and supporting their children. Teachers can only do so much. If parents aren't involved with both the schools and their children, their children are never going to live up to their potential.
