Man, voting on this bracket is stressful lol! BN got some joints (Still love the Love Me or Leave Me Alone radio edit!) but against Wu-Tang... damn son! The Wu are definitely my favorite group of all time. Wu affected the game on so many levels.
Shaolin shadowboxing ...and the Wu-Tang sword style

damn its gon be sad to vote WU over the LOX, but i just did vote 2 live crew over them, not cause their better, i admit their not, but they did alot more for hip hop than maybe any one ealse on this list...

and mainly cause their from Dade..

    MIAMI STAND UP

    RIP O.D.B.

djezi wu-tang has 2 legitimately dope classic albums (i know that's subjective at it's core, but still). A few Wu's classic solo LP's might as well be Wu albums (see Ironman and Liquid Swords), AND some of the Wu Affiliate albums weren't bad (see Sunz of Man, Wu Affiliates, Cappadonna, etc)

I love me some Sadat X (listening to the Wild Cowboys album right now) but still...

i base My vote strictly on body Of work

  • vora - 10 years ago

@Ethan, I'm not sure that's how we're supposed to evaluate the list. Jalen and Jacoby said in their podcast that when you consider a group like the Lox you gotta look at their solo ish too.

But honestly, whether we look at group work only or include solo work, I'd still be voting Wu-Tang. Yes, Brand Nubian had more classic group albums (3 to 2 by my reckoning) but 36 Chambers is on the very, very short list for best record of ALL TIME. And it's not like Wu's other albums were bad, they just aren't quite on that classic level. Even 8 Diagrams had some amazing music with "Windmill", "The Heart Gently Weeps", etc.

Ultimately, Wu's impact on hip-hop culture is just too massive to be overcome by a group with as low a profile as Brand Nubian.

I'm a huge Wu fan but people PLEASE realize...this is GROUP v. GROUP not group LPs and the classic solo LPs associated with said group v. the other group's LPs. This is why Wu will win, although, i don't personally believe Wu to be the best. First, Wu has a HUGE fanbase and gets exposure to today's generation. Second, and i knew this would happen (especially with Wu fans), people are combining the groups albums and the individual's albums and comparing that to a single groups catalog. No other group will win just because of this. I'm not lobbying for a Brand Nubian retrial at all, I'm just trying to get everyone to be fair when voting so we can see which group is the "best" and not which group has the most successful members.

Grand Puba had a pretty good solo career, and Wild Cowboys from Sadat X was pretty good. But that doesn't nearly compare to the number of amazing solo Wu projects. Liquid Swords, Ironman, Tical, Nigga Please... Cuban Linx alone is a better solo album than anything from a Brand Nubian member. And Wu is STILL putting out great solo records, Twelve Reasons to Die, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, half of Czarface...

No offense to Brand Nubian, but c'mon, this is Wu-Tang we're talking about. If you're gonna go out, at least go out to the eventual winners.

Anybody thinking Band Nubian, should of had the upset or any votes against WU TANG. Is straight retarded. Wu Tang is one of the most iconic group ever in any music, when Brand Nubian was on top of their games they were playing second fiddle to NWA and Dre's G Funk movement. It wasn't till Wu Tang came along and brought the crown back to the east coast. Then Biggie. An the fact Onyx isn't in the tournament is kinda weird

    @dr shabazz, are you stupid?
brand Nubian spawned multiple high quality solo LPs
I give the GZA mad props, and the rest of WU but BN is profound shit yo

  • ihatework - 10 years ago

tough one here, gotta lotta love for brand nubian but wu-tang is just too much here. agree with the other commenting on stetsasonic/organized konfusion/ultramagnetic mc's being absent. they were better and brung more to the table than dipset and a couple of others that got seeded in this comp.

  • HurriCrain - 10 years ago

almost against anyone else id vote for BN, but damn not against the WU

  • Rick in Venice - 10 years ago

How do you guys leave out Stetsasonic? They were arguably the first Wu-Tang prototype, with a ton of members, all doing their own things, away from the base group. History has forgotten how big they were, but I am surprised Jalen (as the elder statesmen) left them out.

  • Ant - 10 years ago

Wu-Forever was an absolute classic. Do you even remember June of 97'? First time I ever heard of record stores re-opening at midnight to sell the album that Tuesday.

    "Reunited! Double LP, world excited!"

The 'W' is extremely underrated, the rest are good to OK efforts. And what about all the spawned Wu-fam albums (Killarmy, Sunz of Man, etc. etc.). Plus, all the solos are essentially Wu-Tang group albums with the amount of features on them. Like was said on the podcast, everyone is competing for 2nd place here.

  • vora - 10 years ago

Organized Konfusion definitely got screwed. I'd put "Releasing Hypnotical Gases" and "Prisonsers of War" up against some of these groups entire discography. Monch is on the short list for greatest MCs of all time. Their eponymous album is top three most slept on albums of all time. Stress: Extinction Agenda is a classic. And Equinox could hold it's own.

  • David Amidon - 10 years ago

I get the nostalgia for Brand Nubian as a movement, but their shit did not age well (and neither did their individual members, if we're being honest). Brand Nubian is more relevant in 2014 as an idea, not so much an actual experience. I agree with others who are baffled they could get on this list and Organized Konfusion couldn't considering Stress: The Extinction Agenda is one of the ten greatest hip-hop albums of all time, and the other two aren't much worse.

  • the ghost of leonard tose - 10 years ago

if you are counting wu solo jawns then they win...but group vs. group goes to brand nubian

also one for all is a better album than 36 chambers

  • AP - 10 years ago

Wu will win with ease and they should. But brand nubian got screwed in the seedlings. They deserved better

  • Greyhound - 10 years ago

Come off it. One for All was a great album and they were an influential group. But 36 Chambers... It's so hard to pick I've gotta go best song, and I don't care what y'all say, that is 'Who Can Get Busy Like This Man...' For real.

  • vora - 10 years ago

Bill Hank you are 100% right.

  • bill hank - 10 years ago

Fuckin no contest! I will use this post to opine that Organized Konfusion and Ultramagnetic should have been included! Travesty!

  • Dr. Shabazz - 10 years ago

    Wu Tang Forever!

I always felt Wu Tang Forever was better than Enter The 36 Chambers, but my friends act like that's such a blasphemous thing to say.
Wu had SEVERAL classic solo LPs too. Nobody from Brand Nubian (a group whom I love), had a classic solo album.

  • djezi - 10 years ago

This should be closer. How many legitimately dope, classic albums have the Wu had again? One? Right.
